Detroit Michigan vuol dire ritmo, rumore e musica. E’ il suono delle catene di montaggio che da sempre sfornano le automobili, e’ la musica della Motown, il rock grezzo ad alta tensione degli MC5, il ruggito degli Stooges, la pulsazione della Techno.

Detroit e’ fatta di asfalto, miseria e canzoni. Detroit e’ la Rock City americana.

Girando nei suoi locali di notte, fra band punk rock e stelle underground abbiamo incontrato un personaggio particolare, che sembrava uscito da un racconto.

Ci siamo messi a parlare per caso e dopo un po’, incuriosito da questi Italiani in giro nella Motorcity,   si presenta: Sono Victor Peraino, tastierista dei Kingdom Come di Arthur Brown. Restiamo molto sorpresi da questo incontro apparentemente fuori contesto. Cosa ci fa a Detroit, in una serata come questa? Certo, conosciamo i suoi dischi, ma lo immaginavamo Inglese, europeo al cento per cento, invece e’ qui, in questa citta’ strana che e’ nato e cresciuto. La nostra reciproca curiosita’ aumenta dopo le prime battute, ci scambiamo i numeri di telefono e decidiamo di chiamarci nei prossimi giorni.

La sua chiamata arriva la settimana dopo, accompagnata da una grossa sorpresa. Arthur Brown e’ con lui, e stanno ultimando delle registrazioni per il prossimo disco in uscita per l’etichetta italiana Black Widow… Se vogliamo, possiamo raggiungerli in studio l’indomani verso ora di pranzo per una lunga chiacchierata…

Inutile dire che il giorno dopo arriviamo all’indirizzo dello studio puntuali, increduli e un po’ emozionati…

“ Il mio e’ un cognome italiano, Peraino, la mia famiglia viene dalla Sicilia e io pur essendo stato in Italia diverse volte, da quelle parti ancora non ci sono passato… Sono cresciuto qui a Detroit e ho iniziato a suonare molto presto, alla fine degli anni sessanta non ancora maggiorenne. In quel periodo le band suonavano in locali non troppo grandi, spesso ex sale da ballo o piccoli teatri, che venivano trasformati in club pazzeschi, posti dove tutto poteva succedere…A San Francisco e New York c’erano i famosissimi Fillmore, qui era la Grande Ballroom. Un mio amico era il “MC” di quel posto fantastico, quello che saliva sul palco con il microfono ad introdurre le band… Io avevo diciassette anni soltanto e lui mi chiese se volevo entrare in un gruppo che stava formando, avevano bisogno di un batterista. Senza pensarci troppo dissi di si, e tutto e’ iniziato cosi… Una band praticamente nata dentro la Grande Ballroom, con i fratelli Rasmussen alla chitarra e basso, ci chiamavamo Up, e suonavamo garage rock un po’ ingenuo ma pieno di energia. Aprivamo le serate supportando band famose, abbiamo suonato innumerevoli volte con gli MC5 e altrettante con gli Stooges, i Frost e tanti altri. Tanto per dirne una, abbiamo suonato anche con i Cream! Pensa che una volta Dennis Thompson, il batterista degli MC5, mi chiese di aiutarlo alle percussioni per un concerto speciale. Dovevano suonare insieme alla Jimi Hendrix Experience…E quella fu la prima volta che incontrai Jimi, facemmo subito amicizia nei camerini…”

La prima?! Perché lo hai incontrato ancora?

“ Sì. Avevo deciso di chiudere la mia esperienza con gli Up, e muovermi in una differente direzione artistica, non piu’ necessariamente legata a quel tipo di suoni. Nel frattempo ero a New York con amici e amiche, erano i giorni del festival di Woodstock e avevamo pensato all’ultimo momento di andarci. Arrivati in zona ci rendiamo conto che le strade erano tutte bloccate, tranne una stradina sterrata, probabilmente usata dai trattori. Mi metto a guidare molto lentamente su questo sentiero, e dopo un po’ vediamo come in un miraggio apparire le luci del palco…Continuiamo increduli, fino a ritrovarci nell’area backstage, dove finiva questa sterrata. Avevamo veramente un look da rockstar e la security all’epoca non era certo come oggi, ci siamo quindi messi a girare nell’area artisti senza problemi, quando vedo Hendrix andare verso un camper. Gli vado incontro, gli ricordo del concerto insieme a Detroit, e lui si ferma a fumare e parlare con noi per un po’. Poi mi dice di seguirlo che di li a poco avrebbe dovuto suonare, e cosi mi sono goduto a pochi metri da lui la sua storica esibizione a Woodstock!”

Ora si unisce a noi anche Arthur Brown, in perfetta forma e con gli occhi luminosi di entusiasmo. E’ una leggenda vivente, ha attraversato da protagonista tutta la storia del rock, e ce lo ritroviamo davanti, felice di questa inaspettata opportunita’ di condividere con noi e Victor alcuni ricordi dei loro momenti insieme.

A questo punto mi viene spontanea la domanda: Ma tu ragazzo di Detroit, come ci sei finito nella band di Arthur Brown?! Come vi siete incontrati!?

“ E’ stato tutto un concatenarsi di piccoli eventi, che passo dopo passo ci hanno portato ad incontrarci…Uno di quei percorsi strani, un po’ magici, che la vita alle volte ti presenta e tu lo segui cosi, un po’ per istinto, senza sapere bene perche’. Io avevo chiuso con la batteria e con un certo tipo di rock. Band come Moody Blues, King Crimson e Genesis mi avevano spinto verso una ricerca sonora piu’ complessa, volevo suonare le tastiere ed elaborare un esperienza diversa. Per farlo avevo bisogno di un Mellotron, ma qui negli States all’epoca era molto costoso. Mi resi conto che era piu’ conveniente andare in Inghilterra alla fabbrica, farmene fare uno, passare qualche settimana in Europa e riportarlo indietro, piuttosto che comprarlo qui in Michigan…Il mio manager mi diede un paio di contatti a Londra di persone da cui poter stare e cosi sono partito. Tutto ando’ benissimo, e mentre aspettavo che mi facessero il mio Mellotron, presi un furgone Volkswagen e me ne andai in giro per l’Europa. Dopo aver attraversato la Germania e buona parte dell’Italia arrivai a Roma. Qui incontrai una ragazza bellissima e passammo insieme diversi giorni. Il posto all’epoca in cui si radunavano tutti gli hippies di passaggio nella capitale era la scalinata di Piazza di Spagna …

… un pomeriggio mentre ero li che suonavo il flauto incontrai per puro caso alcuni dei tipi che mi avevano ospitato a Londra. Ricordo che una di loro era la fidanzata di Mike Oldfield, e che avevano intenzione di tornare in Inghilterra il giorno dopo. Dovevo andare anche io, quindi offrii un passaggio volentieri. Durante il viaggio mi dissero che una volta a Londra sarebbero andati al festival di Reading con Arthur Brown, e che se la cosa mi interessava mi sarei potuto unire a loro…E cosi, come per incanto, dopo un paio di giorni mi ritrovo nei camerini del festival a parlare con Arthur di musica e sintetizzatori, come fossimo vecchi amici. Arriva il momento del concerto e il loro tastierista non si presenta…all’ultimo minuto Arthur si volta e mi dice di salire sul palco con loro e tirare fuori qualche suono dal loro synth VCS3…”

Ma come, senza averti mai visto prima, senza prove, senza sapere i loro pezzi, cosi al volo?! A questo punto interviene Arthur con una risata esplosiva “ Ahahah!! Si, e’ andata proprio cosi, vista la situazione ho pensato meglio provare con lui che senza tastiere, e infatti se l’e’ cavata alla grande, e’ stato un concerto bellissimo e l’inizio di una lunga amicizia umana e artistica!” E’ molto bello vederli insieme oggi, a ricordare questi momenti e raccontarceli a noi.

“ Prima di salire sul palco, non avendo idea che questa cosa sarebbe successa, mi ero fumato una canna enorme, e provate a pensare come mi sentivo pochi minuti dopo, improvvisamente sul palco del festival di Reading, decine di migliaia di persone e io davanti a un VCS3 che non avevo mai visto in vita mia, a connettere cavi e sperimentare suoni con una band che non avevo mai sentito prima! Follia pura…Ma mi trovai molto bene in quella follia, cosi che entrai nella band seduta stante, e caricato a bordo il Mellotron andammo in tour e poi in studio. Era la realizzazione del mio sogno artistico, non avrei potuto sperare di essere in nessun altro gruppo che L’Arthur Brown Kingdom Come di quel periodo.”

Insieme registrarono un disco incredibile, capolavoro di psichedelia, progressive e space rock: Journey. Probabilmente il primo album ad essere interamente sostenuto dai ritmi della drum machine, e’ un susseguirsi di brani molto itensi. la voce di Brown e la chitarra di Andy Derby viaggiano nelle pulsazioni elettroniche e nelle tastiere visionarie di Victor Peraino, un disco che ancora oggi non ha perso un grammo della sua spiazzante originalita’.

Continuano insieme Arthur e Victor sull’onda dei ricordi…

“ Il tour di Journey fu un esperienza fortissima. Abbiamo suonato in tanti posti e in situazioni diversissime. Pensa che per un po’ abbiamo avuto come support i Queen! Non li conosceva ancora nessuno e il loro manager non riusciva a trovare una label interessata alla loro proprosta…E poi trovavamo sempre situazioni, persone strane, inusuali. Ricordo una volta che al concerto si presento’ un tipo con una quantita’ infinita di LSD gratuita per tutti. Band, pubblico, personale del locale, eravamo tutti totalmente in acido nello stesso momento! A fine show arriva da noi una tipa del tutto stravolta e ci dice Ragazzi! Mentre suonavate ho visto Dio!! E noi, esausti e alterati a nostra volta, le diciamo si, si certo, ok…Ma lei va verso un lavandino, infila la testa sotto l’acqua e poi torna di corsa da noi con i capelli tutti bagnati e gocciolanti, ci si piazza davanti e dice Ci credete adesso!?!? Si, certo, ci crediamo, come no, stai tranquilla…Ma si vede che non avevamo la faccia abbastanza convinta, non sembravamo abbastanza credenti, e lei di punto in bianco si toglie di dosso tutti i vestiti, e si mette a uralre Ho visto Dio! Ora vi scopo a tutti quanti siete e vediamo se finalmente mi credete!!! Ahahah! Erano giorni strani quelli del tour di Journey…”

Adesso e’ Arthur Brown a parlare. “ Avremmo potuto andare avanti, era veramente un piacere suonare con quella formazione. Ma io ero in un periodo di crisi personale, avevo bisogno di ritirarmi per un po’ dalle scene, e seguire un mio percorso spirituale. Eravamo sul Lago di Ginevra e presi la decisione che una volta finiti i concerti ancora da fare, avrei di fatto sciolto la band.”

Erano finiti i giorni dell’ Arthur Brown Kingdom Come, una delle esperienze piu’ interessanti della scena prog underground inglese. Ma non era certo finita per Victor, il quale prese tastiere e bagagli torno’ nella sua Detroit. Aveva scoperto tante cose in quel periodo…” Mi piaceva tantissimo stare sul palco e creare una certa teatralita’, uno spettacolo che fosse anche visivo, con costumi trucchi e tutto il resto…Mi piacevano i suoni del prog europeo, mi piaceva la ricerca, la sperimentazione, l’apertura mentale che avevo trovato da quelle parti…Decisi allora di portare qui in America alcuni dei musicisti Inglesi che avevo incontrato, e registrare un disco con il mio nome. Ma per problemi di visto di ingresso dei musicisti la cosa stava per sfumare…Poi pero’ decidemmo di tentare il passaggio di confine dal Canada, in modo da aggirare i controlli alla frontiera! La cosa riusci, e registrammo No Man’s Land, a nome del Victor Peraino’s Kingdom Come. In quel disco, ristampato poi dalla Italiana Black Widow, oltre a suonare tutte le tastiere cantavo anche, cosa che ho continuato a fare da allora in poi.”

E’ un disco particolare No man’s Land, con al suo interno diversi gioielli nascosti del progressive anni settanta. Dominano le tastiere, ma in un modo diverso dal solito, meno legate ai virtuosismi classicheggianti dei contemporanei, volte piu’ a creare un suono di atmosfera, un ambientazione per ogni brano, con la voce di Peraino che arriva perfetta in questo contesto. Un disco molto interessante con una copertina bellissima, di quelle che non si dimenticano e che ti fanno viaggiare con la fantasia.

Sono passati molti anni da allora, e sia Victor che Arthur Brown hanno attraversato differenti momenti nelle loro carriere e nei loro percorsi esistenziali ed artistici.

Ma il destino li ha portati ancora ad unire le rispettive sensibilita’, inaspettatamente, come sempre capita nelle cose piu’ belle, quelle che accadono senza forzature, senza essere costruite a tavolino da nessuno.

“ Ci siamo ritrovati dopo tanto, tantissimo tempo, e come se fosse la cosa piu naturale del mondo abbiamo iniziato a comporre, a suonare insieme in studio e live. Io sono andato in Inghilterra e mi sono unito ai concerti di Arthur, lui e’ venuto a Detroit e abbiamo registrato diverso materiale…Abbiamo ricominciato a sperimentare, a provare suoni strani, vecchi synth, computer, esoterismi e antichi rituali spazio temporali, e ora…Stiamo continuando a farlo divertendoci da matti!”

Li lasciamo alle loro cose, hanno altro materiale da registrare, alcuni dei pezzi andranno nel nuovo album, il titolo e’ “Journey in Time”. Esattamente quello che hanno fatto insieme a noi Victor Peraino e Arthur Brown.

Detroit Michigan means rythm, noise and music. It’s the sound of the working class at the assembly lines that every day create new automobiles, it’s Motown music, it’s raw high energy rock and roll of MC5 and The Stooges, it’ the endeless pulse of Techno.

Detroit is made of asphalt, poverty and songs. Detroit is the Rock City.

Wandering around in clubs, with punk rock bands and underground stars, we met a very special guy, somebody that seems as if he is coming out of a novel.

We start talking, and after a while he introduces himself: I am Victor Peraino, keyboard player of Kingdom Come and the legendary Arthur Brown. We are so surprised.. What is he doing in Detroit on a night like this? Sure, we know his records, and we tought he was british, one hundred percent european, but no, he is a Detroiter born and raised in the Motor city. Our curiosity grows while we talk to each other, and so we decide to exchange our phone numbers and keep in touch.

His call arrives in the next week, with a big surprise. Arthur Brown is with him, they are working on some recordings for a new album, coming out on the Italian label Black Widow…If we want we can meet each other at the studio the next day.

So, here we are, in time, excited and a little bit nervous…

“ Mine is an Italian name, Peraino, my family is from Sicily and i have been in Italy more than once…I grew up in Detroit and started playing music immediately, at the end of the sixties when I was a teen ager. At that time bands used to play in clubs not too big, often old dancing ballrooms or theaters, transformed into amazing venues where everything and anything could happen all the time. In San Francisco and New York there was the famous Fillmore, here in Detroit there  was the Grande Ballroom. A friend of mine was the “MC” in that crazy place…I was only seventeen and he asked me if i wanted to join a band that he was putting togheter because they needed a drummer. I said yes without hesitation, and everything started…a band born in the Grande Ballroom, with the Rasmussen brothers on guitar and bass, we were called UP. We played our version of garage rock. We were often opening for very big names, many times sharing the bill with Stooges and MC5, Frost and many others. We even opened for Cream one night! Then one day Dennis Thompson,the drummer of the MC5, asked me if i wanted to play percussion on stage with him at a very special show at the Masonic Temple with Jimi Hendrix Experience. That was the first time i met Jimi, and we became friends in the dressing room.”

First time? Did you met him again?

“ Yes. I ended my experience with UP, and i felt the desire to move in a different direction, no longer connected with that kind of sound. In the meantime i was in New York with some friends, the Woodstock festival was happening at that time and we all decided to go at the very last minute. Once we arrived there we figured out that all roads were packed with endless lines of cars. So we found a little dirt road, maybe used by farmers with their tractors. I started driving along this tiny road very slowly, and after a while the lights of the stage appeared in front of us like in a dream. I kept going and we all ended up in the backstage area. Security was nothing like it is today, and we looked like a band, so nobody bothered us and we wandered in the artist’s area when, all of a sudden, i saw Hendrix…i went to him and he remeber very well our meeting in Detroit, so we were  togheter backstage smoking and talking, when he realized it’s time to go on stage. So i was right there, on the side of the stage during his legendary show in Woodstock.”

Now Arthur Brown joins our conversation, in perfect shape with a sparkle of enthusiasm in his eyes. He is a living legend, a major figure all through the history of rock music, happy to share with us and Victor memories of their time togheter.

 I can’t help  to ask : How you, a Detroit kid, ended up in Arthur Brown’s band?!

“ it’s been a chain of events, that step by step brought us togheter…One of the strange and magical paths that life sometimes gives to you…and all you can do is follow, trusting your inuition without really knowing why…

I was tired of playing drums. I was inspired by new bands like Moody Blues, King Crimson, Genesis, wishing to go in a different direction. I wanted to play keyboards and start a new musical experience. To do that, i really needed to buy a Mellotron.  I found out it was more expensive to import one in the States than going to England myself, and having one made for me over there. My manager gave me some contacts with the right people and off i went. Everything turned out great, and while i was waiting to have my Mellotron made, i rented a Volkswagen van and drove through Germany, and all the way to Rome Italy.  I met a beautiful girl there, and we had a great time in the city. At the time the place where all Hippies, musicians and strange people from all over the world were meeting each other was Piazza di Spagna. One day, while i was there playing flute sitting on the steps of the big ancient stairs, i saw some of the people that let me stay in their place in London. One of them was Mike Oldfield’s girlfriend and they were getting ready to go back to England. So i offered them a ride, and on the way home they asked me if i wanted to join them in the next days, going to the Reading festival with Arthur Brown’s Kingdom Come band. And so, like in a dream, i found myself backstage at the Reading festival talking with Arthur about music and syntesizers like old friends! When the time came to go on stage, their keyboard players didn’t show up! At the very last moment Arthur came to me and asked me to join the band, “just go on stage and make some noise with our brand new synth VCS3!”…Without even knowing their songs or any chance to practice what so ever! “

Now  Arthur is talking with a big laughter…“ Ahahaha!! Yeah, this is exactly how happened! I thought, better to try with this guy than no keybords…And that was a great choice…a great show and the beginning of a very long personal and artistic realtionship!”

It’ beautiful to see them togheter today, sharing their memories with us.

“ Right before going on stage, not knowing what was happening, i smoked a big fat joint made of hashish mixed with weed…Try to imagine how i felt, on stage with all the lights , and this VCS3 that i not only saw or played before, connecting cables and moving a kind of joystick to create strange loud sounds, with a band i never met before! That was pure craziness…But in some way i felt very good in that craziness and i joined the band on the spot. I had my brand new Mellotron, went on the bus and on tour with them. That was a dream for me, i couldn’t hope to be in a better band than Kingdon Come at that time: Theatrical, experimental, melodic and powerful all at the same time. Just perfect.

They recorded an amazing album, a strange mix of psychedelia, progressive and space rock: “ Journey “. One of the first, if not the first, rock album based on the beat of a drum machine, a collection of very intense tracks. Brown’s voice and the magic guitar of Andy Dalby traveled through the electronic beats and the visionary keyboards of Victor Peraino, a record still very strong and unique today, after all these years.

“ The tour of Journey was such a strong experience for all of us. We played in many places and in very different situations. For a while our opening band was Queen! Nobody knew them at the time, and their manger was ready to drop them, because there weren’t any label interested in their music…Every night was a different and strange situation. We did one gig and this guy came with a lot of free LSD for everybody in the place. Band, crowd, people working at the venue, everybody was tripping at the same time! As soon as the show ended, this girl came in the dressing room and shouted “ Guys! While you were playing i saw god!! “ We were exausted and still tripping out of our mind, so we told her, yeah, sure, ok…And then she ran to the sink, put her head under the water and then ran back to us, with her hair dripping wet yelled “ I saw god,do you belive me now!?! “ Yeah, we belive you, take it easy, it’s ok…Maybe our faces were not enough like belivers, and so all of a sudden, she took all her clothes off, jumped on a chair and screamed on top of her lungs “ I am going to fuck each and everyone of you!!! I saw god, do you belive me now?!?!? “ That tour was a crazy time man! “

Now is Arthur speaking. “ We could go on, it was really a pleasure to play with the Journey line up. But i was going through a time of personal changes, i needed to go on my own spiritual path for a while. We were near the Ginevra Lake when i decided that i want to brake up the band.”

The days of Arthur Brown Kingdom Come were over, and so was one of the most exciting band of the british progressive underground scene.

Of course it was not over for Victor. He packed the keyboards and  his dreams and came back to Detroit. By then he understood a few important things. “ I love to be on stage and put togheter a show not only about music, but also something to be seen, to be experienced with all your senses, with make up, coustumes, lights and more. I love the european progressive sound, the feeling of exploring different musical landscapes, i love the open mind attitude that i found over there in europe. So i decided to bring  to Detroit some of the musicians i met in England, and make a record in my name. We had a very hard time bringing them across the border because of some visa issues. But i didn’t give up, and we managed to bring them across the border through Canada.  In some way…Everything went fine, and we recorded “ No Man’s Land “ by Victor Peraino’s Kingdom Come. In that record, now avalabile on Black Widow, other than just play keyboards, i started singing.”

It’s a very special album No Man’s Land, with many golden nuggets of seventies prog rock. A very keyboards driven work, with a special feeling, different from one track to the next, with the beautiful voice of Peraino, perfect in this place.

A very interesting record with a wonderful cover, the kind that you can’t forget and makes you travel with your fantasy.

It’s been a long time, and both Victor and Arthur Brown had been going through different stages of their musical careers and personal lives. But somehow, someway, life crossed their paths again, in a very natural and easy way, like it was meant to be. That’s the way magic is.

“ We met each other again after a very long time, and like it was the most natural thing to do, we started playing and writing music togheter again.  I went in England a couple of times and joined Arthur during some special shows, he came back to Detroit and we recorded some new stuff… And here we are, experimenting again, discovering new sounds, computers, esoteric things,ancient rituals of space and time…and we are having a great time! “

It’s time for us to go. they are working with Skid Marx on some new songs, the new album is out and it’s called “ Journey in Time “ . Like the one we took, with Victor Peraino and Arthur Brown.
