Fino al 1980 JEFF BECK è stato uno che ha flirtato spesso con la TOP 20 americana, risultati assai lusinghiere per uno che faceva un genere non certo appetibile a tutti. Nel 1975 poi toccò il vertice con BLOW BY BLOW, album tutto strumentale, arrivando alla 4° posto della BILLBOARD TOP 200. Il bootleg di cui parliamo oggi è preso da quella tournée intrapresa insieme al grande BERNARD PURDIE (vi ricordate il BERNARD PURDIE shuffle di cui abbiamo parlato anche qui sul blog? Quello a cui JOHN BONHAM si ispirò per FOOL IN THE RAIN?) e al fidato MAX MIDDLETON al piano. Io ho un debole per MIDDLETON e sentirlo insieme a JEFF BECK mi incendia sempre l’animo.
Questa della Empress Valley è la ristampa di tre soundboard presenti già tempo sul mercato e pubblicati sotto forma di bootleg più volte. Sono tre date consecutive dello stesso tour, chiaro che le performance e le scalette finiscono per essere molto simili, se non identiche e si differenziano dunque solo per piccole curiosità, come quella presente nel secondo concerto dove BECK e il batterista sbagliano ad affrontare SUPERSTITION (la velocità è folle), così BECK si ferma e ricomincia.
In tutti e tre i concerti DEFINITELY MAYBE è attaccata a FREEWAY JAM, la copertina li riporta invece come due pezzi staccati, sbagliando la numerazione delle tracce. Nel terzo CD c’è un errore in più visto che la traccia 10 è dedicata all’accordatura. Un lavoro dunque non all’altezza della EMPRESS VALLEY, nessuno che si sia preso la briga di ascoltare e controllare la indicizzazione.
Tra i miei momenti preferiti, la versione di JEFF BECK di SHE’S A WOMAN dei BEATLES …

Until 1980 JEFF BECK has been one that has often flirted with the Top 20 American chart and it’s a very flattering thing for someone who was doing a kind of music certainly not that easy. In 1975, then he touched the summit with BLOW BY BLOW,an all instrumental album, reaching the 4th position of the BILLBOARD TOP 200chart. The bootleg we’re talking about today is taken from that tour undertaken together with the great Bernard Purdie (remember the Bernard Purdie shuffle we’ve talked about here on the blog? He inspired JOHN BONHAM for FOOL iN tHE RAIN) and the trusted MAX MIDDLETON . I have a soft spot for MIDDLETON and when he is with JEFF BECK they always set my sould on fire.
FEED BECK is a Empress Valley reissue of three soundboards already on the market and published in the form of bootleg several times. They are three dates in a row of the same tour, it’s clear that the performances and the set lists end up being very similar, if not identical and differ therefore only with small curiosities, such as the one in the second concert where BECK and the drummer attack SUPERSTITION with the wong (insane) speed so BECK stops and starts again.
In all the three concerts DEFINITELY MAYBE is attached to FREEWAY JAM, the cover has them instead as two separate songs , so the track numbers in not correct. In the third CD there is another mistake: track 10 is dedicated to the tuning and not to a song, so the set list is a mess . This work therefore is not up to the EMPRESS VALLEY, no one who has taken the trouble to listen and control the indexing.

non sono uno storico delle registrazioni live di Jeff Beck ma sono quasi sicuro che il terzo cd contenga il SB finora inedito di quel concerto.
A proposito di errori: sembra ormai che sia un trend mettere tracklist scorrette… anche l’ultimo boxset del concerto di Fort Worth contiene madornali sviste!

Dopo una vacanza di 1.200 km in auto tra friuli, cadore e alto adige,
ieri mi rifugio nella mia montagna e scendendo a Porretta trovo
l’america a 6 chilometri da casa.
BERNARD PURDIE si aggira per il corso ed alle 11 sono in una sala
dell’hotel italia dove il batterista fornisce un bell’assaggio del suo
drumming.
BERNARD PURDIE é la stella del PORRETTA SOUL FESTIVAL.
In effetti sentirlo suonare dal vivo e da molto vicino desta una
certa impressione.
Il tipo pesta duro e ci sa fare.
Nel pomeriggio assisto alle prove nel parco dove si svolge il festival.
Purdie é un grande, non c’è dubbio.
Stamattina riscendo a porretta che assomiglia piu’ a memphis,
mentre il soul si suona in piazza come aperitivo.
Un mio amico mi racconta che Purdie ieri in un intervista si é
vantato di aver suonato le congas in SGT PEPPERS.
Da anni il batterista sostiene di aver prestato la sua opera in
piu’ di venti canzoni dei beatles in overdubbing su richiesta di
Epstein per il mercato americano.
Sicuramente Purdie ha suonato con tutti ma forse sui beatles è
da tempo che le spara grosse.
Mi fa solo piacere che l’ultima sparata l’abbia fatta da porretta
perche’ il PORRETTA SOUL FESTIVAL é STUPENDO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Non amo il Soul dunque non ho mai frequentato il Porretta Soul Festival, ma Bernard Purdie è toghissimo. Ne abbiamo già parlato qui sul blog, il BP shuffle è leggendario, è il ritmo da cui JOHN BONHAM si è ispirato per FOOL IN THE RAIN.
