JOHNNY WINTER “Step Back” (Megaforce records 2014) – TTT½

Di solito questo tipo di album mi danno da fare, quasi sempre risultano essere esercizietti di vecchie rockstar che non san più cosa inventare. Johnny Winter però è uno dei nomi a me più cari, uno di quelli che mi hanno fatto diventare quel che sono, è in più Johnny Winter se ne è andato solo pochi mesi fa, lasciandomi – ancora oggi- in uno stato di prostrazione continua, ecco dunque che non ho esitato nemmeno un momento ad acquistare questa sua ultima fatica. Sapete però che nonostante tutto sono inflessibile anche con i miei idoli, che sono schietto e sincero fino all’autolesionismo, quindi non posso non notare alcune cose discutibili. La band che ha accompagnato Johnny in questi ultimi anni è fatta di musicisti di seconda fascia di provenienza hardrock, gente da Rockpalast, come diremmo io e Picca, gente che non ha esattamente il groove tenebroso e al contempo brioso del blues, quello vero.

Le partecipazioni di ospiti illustri poi non sono sempre gran cosa, Paul Nelson- chitarrista manager di JW- ha pasturato alla boia d’un giuda, attirando gente che non c’entra granché con la legacy del grande JOHNNY WINTER. Cosa ce ne facciamo di Ben Harper, Jason Ricci, Joe Bonamassa e dello stesso Paul Nelson? Il discorso è diverso per nomi come BILLY GIBBONS, LESLIE WEST e Dr JOHN, musicisti dalla connection innegabile col nostro Texas Hurricane. Per quant0 ami JOE PERRY e BRIAN SETZER già trovo più complicato inserirli nel contesto. Per ERIC CLAPTON, mi astengo dal giudizio, ormai ho davvero tanti, troppi problemi nel rapportarmi a lui. Storco la bocca anche riguardo la scelta dei brani scelti. Cosa c’entra UNCHAIN MY HEART? E’ stata scelta solo per poter far suonare i BLUES BROTHERS HORNS?

Fatte queste premesse, ciò che colpisce di STEP BACK è la determinazione di JOHNNY WINTER, sia nel cantato che nel chitarrismo, lo senti distintamente che pur a settant’anni rimane un badass, uno cazzuto, uno vero, la conferma di perché è JOHNNY WINTER: il suo attacco, la sua personalità sono innegabili. Il Texas tornado non avrà più la furia degli anni settanta, ma la sua credibilità rimane intatta. La slide di WHO DO YOU LOVE testimonia quanto appena detto. WHERE CAN YOU BE è il tripudio del suono texasnaccio del Rock Blues, courtesy of JOHNNY & BILLY GIBBONS. Ecco, poi arriva DEATH LETTER, solo WINTER con la steel guitar; qualche pasticcio, qualche sbavatura ma anche il vero ed unico senso del Blues!!!

JOHNNY comunque è sufficiente in forma dal punto di vista chitarristico, il suo assolo in LONG TALL SALLY (il primo, seguito immediatamente da quello di LESLIE WEST) ad esempio ce lo fa capire in modo chiaro. Chiude il disco il bel pianino di DR JOHN in BLUE MONDAY.

Il cd contiene anche un plettro, a me è toccata quello rosso. STEP BACK ha raggiunto la 17esima posizione nella US TOP 200.

Disco dignitoso dunque, che ci aiuta ad affrontare un lutto che ancora faatichiamo ad elaborare. Ci manchi, JOHNNY.

Usually this type of album  give me bad feelings, they often  turn out to be old rockstars’ little exercices when they do not know what to invent. Johnny Winter, however, is one of the names most dear to me, one of those that made me become what I am, plus Johnny Winter passed away only few months ago, leaving me – even today- in a state of prostration , so I did not hesitate a moment to buy his latest effort. You know, however, that in spite of everything I am inflexible with my idols, that I am a straight shooter to self-harm, so I can not help but notice some questionable things. The band that accompanied Johnny in recent years is made of second division musicians coming probably from hardrock, people who is right for Rockpalast, as me and Picca would say , people who have not exactly the dark but still lively groove of the blues, the real one.

Involvements of distinguished guests then are not always much, guitarist Paul Nelson- manager of JW- did chum in a cheap way , attracting people that has nothing to do with the legacy of the great JOHNNY WINTER. What are doing here Ben Harper, Jason Ricci, Joe Bonamassa? Different feelings for names like BILLY GIBBONS, Dr JOHN  and LESLIE WEST, musicians from the undeniable connection with our Texas Hurricane. Even if I do love JOE PERRY and BRIAN SETZER I find it more complicated to place them in this context. Regarding the presence of ERIC CLAPTON, I refrain from judgment, nowadays I really have too many problems in approaching him. I pull a face also at the choice of the songs chosen. What does UNCHAIN MY HEART is doing here? Was it chosen just to let the BLUES BROTHERS HORNS play on the album?
Having said this, what is striking in STEP BACK  is JOHNNY WINTER’s resolution both in singing and in guitar playing, you can clearly hear that even at seventy he is still a badass, a real one, the meaning of why he is JOHNNY WINTER , his attack, his personality are undeniable. The Texas Tornado will not have the fury of the seventies, but its credibility remains intact. The slide of WHO DO YOU LOVE shows how just said. WHERE CAN YOU BE is the jubilation of  Texas big’n’terrific Rock Blues guitar sound, courtesy of JOHNNY & BILLY GIBBONS. Here, then comes DEATH LETTER, only WINTER with the steel guitar; some botch, some blur but also the original vibe of Blues !!!

JOHNNY however is sufficient in shape from the standpoint of the guitar, his solo in LONG TALL SALLY (the first, followed immediately by the LESLIE WEST one) for example makes us understand it clearly. The beautiful, gently piano of DR JOHN closes the album with BLUE MONDAY.

The CD also contains aguitar pick, I got the red one. STEP BACK reached the 17th position in the US TOP 200.

Decorous album then, it helps us to face e a loss that we still find hard to accept. We miss you, JOHNNY.
