Ci si meraviglia sempre sul pianeta Zeppelin quando all’improvviso escono registrazioni tratte da fonti fino ad allora sconosciute; anche quando il tutto è più o meno una bufala. E’ il caso di questi quattro (tre) pezzi tratti dal concerto di ZURIGO del 29/06/1980, concerto molti sentito da noi italiani.
L’altro giorno appare su DIMEADOZEN (il più importante sito mondiale di scambio di live recording) un “torrent” relativo a 4 pezzi tratti da ZURIGO 1980 dove si dice che la fonte sarebbe un trasmissione FM della famosa WESTWOOD ONE su registrazioni effettuate all’epoca dalla BBC. Sobbalzo sulla sedia! Mai saputo che la BBC avesse registrato uno dei concerti del tour del 1980. La storia dei LZ si arricchisce quindi di un particolare assai interessante mi dico, e la lista delle registrazioni live del gruppo acquisisce un aggiunta per nulla marginale. La qualità sembra sia migliore del soundboard che circola orma da lustri interi e le interpretazioni iniziano ad avere sviluppi importanti.
Qualcuno scrive infatti che questa fonte sia stata mixata professionalmente; questo starebbe a significare che la BBC al momento della registrazione avrebbe microfonato tutti gli strumenti (come si farebbe per una registrazione multitraccia) e mixato il tutto in diretta. Ora, quando si registra ufficialmente per un album live, microfoni appunto tutti gli strumenti, catturi la registrazione di ognuno di essi e in un secondo momento con queste registrazioni multitraccia vai in uno studio di registrazione e ti prendi tutto il tempo necessario per mixarle come Page comanda. Qui salti l’ultimo passaggio: lo mixi sul momento, bilanciando al meglio le tracce dei vari strumenti. Possiamo dire che una registrazione di questo tipo sta in mezzo tra il semplice soundboard e la registrazione fatta apposta per un live album ufficiale.
Il mio cervello parte in quarta, mette da parte la domanda “ma possibile che in queste 7 lustri di assoluto impegno zeppeliniano io non sia mai venuto a conoscenza di questa registrazione della BBC?”, e fantastica sull’esistenza di un concerto del tour del 1980 registrato dalla BBC. Mi dico, finalmente potrò ascoltare l’ultimo rauco ruggito dei LZ in una qualità che non sia di un semplice soundboard secco e poco dinamico. Scarico il torrent, mi faccio il cd, butto giù velocemente un semplice artwork, esco prima dall’ufficio e mi metto in macchina a volume sostenuto.
Il sound non è affatto male, mi pare che sia meglio del bootleg che ho, ma non mi pare ci sia una gran differenza, in più il quarto pezzo, STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN, non è tratto da Zurigo 1980 ma dalle BBC session del 1971. Arrivo a casa e mi butto a controllare, verificare, studiare.
Dopo alcuni studi di alcuni zeppelinologhi, si scopre che quei 4 pezzi sono presi da vecchie trasmissioni della Westwood One * che oltre al materiale della BBC usarono il soundboard di Zurigo 1980 (che come qualità è forse il migliore di tutti i sbd di quel tour) per arrivare a presentare anche gli ultimi respiri dei LZ. Se TRAMPLED, SIBLY e ACHILLES sembrano avere un sound migliore, come dice SteveZ(oso) dalla bassa California, è grazie alla compressione della trasmissione radiofonica, alla natura del segnale FM che aggiungerebbe un po’ di atmosfera al tutto e al riverbero aggiunto prima della messa in onda.
Tutto qui, peccato, ma è stato bello sognare per un pomeriggio intero.

You always wonder when suddenly a recordings taken from sources hitherto unknown emerge on planet Zeppelin; even when everything is more or less a canard. It is the case of these four (three) pieces taken from the concert of ZURICH on 29.06.1980, a special concert for the Italians fans.
The other day a new torrent appeared on DIMEADOZEN (the world’s most important site for the exchange of live recording); it features 4 pieces from ZURICH 1980 where they says that the source would be a WESTWOOD ONE FM broadcast based on BBC recordings. I jump from the chair! I never knew that the BBC had recorded a 1LZ 1980 tour concert, I tell to myself that the history of the LZ is enriched now for a a new chapter, and the list of live recordings of the group acquires a great addition. They say that the sound quality seems to be better than the soundboard that circulates by decades and interpretations begin to have important developments.
Someone writes that this source has been professionally mixed; this would mean that the BBC at the time of the recording would miked all the instruments (as you would for a multi-track recording) and mixed the whole thing live. Now, when you record for an official live album, you mike all instruments so the recording captures each of them and at a later time with these multi-track recordings you go into a recording studio and you take all the time necessary to mix them as Page commands. Here you skip the last step: you mix it live, balancing in the best possible way the tracks of different instruments. We can say that a recording of this type is in the middle between the simple soundboard and the professional recording made for an official live album.
My brain speeds away and it puts aside the question “is it possible that in these 7 lustrums of absolute zeppelin commitment I never heard about this recording from the BBC?” and therefore it dreams about the existence of a 1980 concert recorded by the BBC. I tell to my self that I can finally hear the latest raucous ruoar of LZ in a quality that is not the one of a dry and not very dynamic soundboard. I download the torrent, I burn a cdr, I quickly scribble down a simple artwork, I leave the office early , I get in the car and I pump up the volume.
The sound is not bad at all, I guess it is better than bootleg I have, but I do not think there is a big difference, plus the fourth track, STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN, is not from Zurich 1980 but it is from the 1971 BBC sessions. I get home and I check, I verify, I investigate.
After some studies of some zeppelin experts, it turns out that those 4 pieces are taken from Westwood One ‘s old broadcasts *, in addition to material from the BBC sessions they used the soundboard of Zurich 1980 ( quality wise it is perhaps the best of all the sbd of that tour) to get on air also the last breath of LZ. If Trampled, Sibly and Achilles seem to have a better sound, like SteveZ (oso) from Southern California says, it is due to compression of the broadcast, the nature of the FM signal that would add a little atmosphere, and reverb added before the airing.
That’s it, too bad, but it was nice to dream for an entire afternoon.

Immagino la delusione ! Una roba del genere avrebbe dato un barlume di speranza , in vista di una futura pubblicazione ufficiale …
Tutto sommato proprio Zurigo è uno dei migliori sbd dal tour (e non solo) , ci si può consolare al meglio con quello edito dalla Tarantura oppure il cdr Zurich 80 (jo jo la frite) , entrambi privi di una parte di Kashmir . Al contrario non m’è piaciuto European Championship , anche se completo , il mix finale di STH , Rock and Roll e Heartbreaker non ha una buona equalizzazione .
Da quel tour mancano all’appello i sbd di Vienna e Monaco (a quanto pare una delle migliori esibizioni) e parte di Rotterdam , solo su aud di bassa qualità .

Tutte le volte che sento parlare di zurigo e di quel 29 di giugno 1980,
non riesco ancora a dimenticare, ad occultare, a nascondere, quel
piccolo dispiacere che ti rimane dentro per una grande
occasione mancata, fallita, perduta per sempre, irrimediabilmente.
E non ci sono scuse.
Posso resuscitare la figura di padoa-schioppa, ministro tanto vituperato,
che parlo’ di generazione di fannulloni.
Beh, anch’io nel 1980 vivevo a casa dei miei a bologna.
Lavoravo da qualche mese appena finito il servizio di leva.
Il rock nella testa ma pochi soldi.
Il primo di giugno di quel 1980 ero in piazza maggiore per il concerto
gratuito dei clash.
Ma di fronte alla trasferta a zurigo, io e i miei amici ci perdemmo in
un bicchiere d’acqua.
Non che sperassi di vederli in italia in futuro.
Lasciammo scorrere l’occasione ( dando ragione a padoa schioppa )
e cosi’ fu.
In tanti mi hanno detto …..hai visto i clash a bologna ?
Per forza ……abitavo li’……a 500 metri da piazza maggiore ci sono
dovuto andare…………
Ma organizzarmi per un viaggio in pullman magari ricordando di portare
la carta d’identita’…………troppo difficile………..
Padoa schioppa avevi ragione ( solo prima del 2007 ).
Per consolarmi concludo con quello che scrivono i francesi su clash e
led zeppelin:
” L’influence de led zeppelin sur le clash n’est pas forcément
evidente, ni musicale.
Mais le deux groupes anglais ont en commun de n’avoir jamais capitalisé
sur une formule de départ, d’avoir ouvert leur musique à des
influence venues d’ailleurs, d’avoir su combiner l’energie primitive
du rock et une vision panoramique.
Et d’avoir rejoint la classe des groupes mythiques et éternels” .
