JUST ANOTHER LOVELY NIGHT WITH THE KEYBOARDS WIZARD – Rick Wakeman, Asti (Italy) July 8, 2015

Nuovo appuntamento con RICK WAKEMAN e con il suo spettacolo di PIANO SOLO; tre volte in poco più di un anno, Saura deve essere contenta. Questa volta, pur avendo i biglietti da tempo, siamo chiamati a dare una mano nella gestione di Rick da CLAUDIO CANOVA, il promoter nostro amico, coinvolto a sua volta dalla agenzia a cui si era rivolto il comune di Asti. CANOVA ci sa fare in queste faccende, ed è bello vedere che questa cosa gli venga riconosciuta.

Appuntamento poco dopo le 16 in un autogrill sulla A21. Ritrovo ad Asti, all’albergo dove alloggia Rick. Claudio fa il check in, io e Saura chiacchieriamo lì fuori con Paolo, medico (e musicista anch’egli) che segue il biondo di Perivale. Con Claudio poi ci incamminiamo a piedi verso il luogo del concerto. Lo spettacolo di RW è previsto all’interno della rassegna AstiMusica.

Mi piace quello che c’è scritto in fondo al poster: Ascolta la musica. Abbi cura della tua città.

Scambio di info con i tecnici che stanno sistemando il pianoforte a coda Steinway & Sons.

Alle 19 Rick arriva in piazza della Cattedrale. Il posto, sì insomma la location, come si dice oggi, è suggestivo.

Rick arriva accompagnato da Paolo e dal personale del comune di Asti. Si fionda sul palco, prova il piano a coda e aiuta i tecnici a spostarlo nella posizione che desidera. Io, Saura e Claudio siamo lì dietro il palco.

Venti minuti e il soundcheck termina. RW scende dal palco, diversi fan  premono per farsi scattare una foto con Rick. Come sempre WAKEMAN è disponibilissimo. Io, Saura, Claudio e Paolo ci disponiamo dietro di lui pronti ad intervenire in caso qualcuno esageri un po’. Ci spostiamo poi nel backstage, nel camerino ricavato nelle stanze della sezione locale della Confartigianato. Claudio chiede a Rick se si rammenta di noi e piuttosto sorprendentemente Rick ci dice “Ehi ciao, siete venuti anche questa volta allora.”. Non sono sicuro che ricordi che ci siamo già visti in un paio di occasioni (SCHIO 2014 e VICENZA 2015), ma la sensazione è che, almeno visivamente, ci abbia riconosciuti. Chissà, forse ogni tanto dà un’occhiata al gruppo facebook RW KEYBOARDS WIZARD che gestisce Saura, e a furia di vedere la foto di se stesso con la reggiana dagli occhi di ghiaccio, la sua memoria deve avere immagazzinato i connotati della (mia) groupie. Ad ogni modo, la cosa ci fa indubbiamente piacere.

RW è uno che non pretende tanto, ma il “rider” che aveva chiesto Claudio non è esattamente rispettato. Nel frigo coca cola e acqua a volontà, qualche birra, ma il resto mi sembra un po’ miserello: qualche sandwich, qualche mela, qualche pesca, una confezione di Canestrelli, un po’ di patatine. Mah.

Rick si immerge subito nella stesura della scaletta e a scrivere gli appunti relativi. Io, Saura, Claudio e Paolo parliamo tra di noi, ma mi sento a disagio, un po’ perché  puoi anche essere experienced finché vuoi, ma avere RW lì di fianco non è esattamente cosa da tutti i giorni, un po’ perché non vorrei che Rick si sentisse escluso. Essendo anglosassone poi non credo che sia uno che rompa il ghiaccio per primo, così mi sa che tocchi a noi latini. Paolo e Claudio si allontanano per andare a verificare i lavori sul palco, rimaniamo nei camerini io, Saura e RW. Guardo the girl from Gavassa, fa la professionale, ma immagino che dentro sia tutto un fuoco. Chiedo con Rick se non lo disturba se parliamo un po’, lui sembra sollevato e ben disposto a chiacchierare. Parto un po’ imballato, ma poi ingrano la quarta è mi metto a discorrere amabilmente con il keyboards wizard. Parliamo di gatti, dato che come noi anche lui è un amante dei felini, ad un certo punto mostra la foto di Harry (uno dei suoi gatti, quello famoso dato che Rick lo cita spesso su twitter) a Saura, e io penso tra me e me: ma guarda un po’, RICK WAKEMAN, ripeto, RICK WAKEMAN che mostra una foto del suo gatto tramite il cellulino a Saura.

Parliamo dei LED ZEPPELIN (dice che è molto amico con RP, amico con JPJ, ricorda le bevute con JOHN BONHAM. Nessuna menzione di PAGE), di calcio (è parecchio informato sulla serie A, analizza brevemente la stagione della mia amata Inter, ha grandi parole per Mancini e una grande stima del mio football god JOSE’ MOURINHO. Rick è un tifoso del BRENTFORD e del MANCHESTER CITY.

Saura mi si avvicina e mi sussurra “Ma, riesci a parlare dell’Inter anche con Rick Wakeman?!”

Tocchiamo inoltre l’argomento di Cuba e della sua avventura relativa (tre concerti tenuti all’HAVANA nel 2005) e del lungo incontro avuto con FIDEL CASTRO. Chiacchierata davvero interessante. Rick ti mette a suo agio, nessun atteggiamento snob da rockstar. Persona davvero meravigliosa.

Salta poi fuori il Rock fan che è in me, così gli chiedo se non lo disturba troppo fare un paio di foto con me e Saura. Rick si dimostra una volta di più disponibilissimo, mentre lo inquadro per lo scatto scherza con Saura, entrambi si mettono a ridere… quadretto irresistibile.

Autografa una delle sue due autobiografie e scrive “Saura, lots of love. Rick Wakeman”.

Poi accade un imprevisto, Saura gli allunga il divudi degli EQUINOX live al Blu J di Reggio Emilia. Prego Rick di gettarlo nel cestino una volta a casa e lui mi fa “Perchè, vi voglio vedere all’opera”. Filmati amatoriali, pezzi dei LZ, un chitarristino come me … cosa potrà pensare un musicista dal lignaggio gigantesco come lui? Mi imbarazzo al solo pensiero.

Arriva poi l’altro Paolo. Io e Saura ci presentiamo. Mentre Rick fa una intervista per la rivista PROG versione italiana, Paolo ci racconta gustosi aneddoti su altri nomi del Rock.

Alle 21,45 è ora di salire sul palco. Lo spettacolo è simile ai due che ho già visto, ma sentire suonare WAKEMAN è sempre un’emozione forte.

Rick parla e racconta qualche aneddoto tra un pezzo e l’altro. In seguito arriva il momento di dedicare qualche pezzo a CHRIS SQUIRE,  scomparso non troppi giorni fa. Rick dice qualcosa, il pubblico si alza in piedi e tributa un lungo applauso in onore del leggendario bassista, fondatore e leader degli YES. Il tributo di Rick si concretizza attraverso THE MEETING, AND YOU AND I e WONDEROUS STORIES.

Il concerto si snoda attraverso classici tratti da album leggendari come  JOURNEY TO THE CENTRE OF THE EARTH e SIX WIVES OF HENRY VIII e altre cosucce meno note. Non mancano gli accenni alle sue collaborazioni con CAT STEVENS e DAVID BOWIE, e le sue riproposizioni di HELP ed ELEANOR RIGBY dei BEATLES.

Un paio di bis, l’ultimo è THE JIG, pezzo scritto per il CIRQUE DU SOLEIL, brano che personalmente mi fa impazzire…

Finito lo show ci dirigiamo in tutta fretta al ristorante, un posto molto blues in pieno centro…

Niente aria condizionata, atmosfera informale, piacevole cena notturna. Paolo ci intrattiene ancora con storielle Rock davvero curiose.

Terminata la cena, ci avviamo verso l’uscita, prendo il cellulare di Saura, tocco inavvertitamente lo schermo e appare lo sfondo del Galaxy…una foto di WAKEMAN. Rick è dietro di me, vede la cosa e mi dice “She needs help”. 

Alcuni fan sono in attesa davanti all’entrata del ristorante. Rick si fa una foto con tutti. Salutiamo Paolo e accompagniamo in macchina Rick in albergo. Ultimi saluti, Rick abbraccia e bacia Saura e sale in camera. Rimaniamo ancora cinque minuti a parlare con Claudio e poi ripartiamo verso la Sweet Home Emilia Romagna.

Arriviamo alla Domus Saurea a notte fonda, doccia e a letto. Sono quasi le 5, domattina dovrei andare in ufficio, domani pomeriggio ci aspettano gli AC/DC a Imola … non so come farò. Ci penserò domani. E’ stata una bella serata e mi voglio godere le buone vibrazioni. Guardo Saura, è ancora sorridente. “Buonanotte groupie. Rick Wakeman rules!”

(BROKEN) ENGLISH

New rendez-vous with RICK WAKEMAN and his PIANO SOLO show; three times in just over a year, Saura should be happy. This time, despite having tickets for some time, we are called to help in the management of Rick from CLAUDIO CANOVA, the promoter and our friend called by the city of Asti (Italy) to handle things. CANOVA is very good in these matters, nice to see they recognize his merits.

We meet shortly after 4 pm in a motorwaycafè on the A21 italian motorway. We then arrive in Asti, at the hotel where Rick stays. Claudio does the check in while me and Saura chat with Paolo, the doctor who follows Rick on his italian dates. Then we stroll to the concert venue. The RW show is incorporated in the Astimusica review.

I like what is written in the bottom of the poster: Listen to the music. Take care of your city.

Rick comes in at 7 pm in the Cathedral Square. The place, so in short, the location, as we say today, is impressive.

Rick arrives accompanied by Paolo and by the staff of the town of Asti. He goes straight on stage, he tries the piano and helps technicians to move it to the position he wants. Me, Saura and Claudio are there behind the stage.

Twenty minutes and soundcheck ends. RW comes down from the stage, several fans are pressing to have their picture taken with Rick. As always WAKEMAN is extremely available. Me, Saura, Claudio and Paolo stay behind him ready to intervene in case someone exaggerating a bit . We move then backstage, in the dressing room housed in the rooms of the local branch of Confartigianato. Claudio asks Rick if he remebner me and Saura and rather surprisingly Rick says “Hey hello, you have come also this time then.”. I’m not sure he remembers that we have already meet twice  (SCHIO 2014 & VICENZA 2015), but the feeling is that, at least visually, he recognizes us. Maybe sometimes he takes a look at the facebook group RW KEYBOARDS WIZARD which Saura manages, and after seeing the pictures of himself with Saura his memory must have stored the connotations of her. However, it undoubtedly is a pleasure.

RW is one that does not claim so much, but the “rider” that Claudio asked is not exactly respected. In the fridge coca cola and water at will, a few beers, but the rest seems a bit poor: some sandwiches, some apples, some peaches, a pack of biscuits, a bit of chips. Well…

Rick immerses himself immediately in writing the setlist and other notes. Me, Saura, Claudio and Paolo do the talking amongst ourselves, but I feel a bit uncomfortable because you may be experienced as you like, but having RW sitting next to you is not exactly every day stuff, and also because I’m worried Rick may feel excluded. As Anglo-Saxon then I do not think he’s one that breaks the ice first, so I guess that it’s up to us Latins. Paolo and Claudio move away to go to see how is the work on the stage, I remain in the dressing room with Saura and RW. I look at the girl from Gavassa, she looks professional, but I guess she’s on fire. I ask Rick if he doesn’t mind if we talk a little ‘, he seems relieved and willing to chat. At the beginning my broken english sound jammed, but then I shifted into fourth and I start talking amiably with the keyboards wizard. Rick is a cats lover so we talk about our pets, at one point he shows the photo of Harry (one of his cats, the famous one since Rick cites him often on twitter) to Saura, and I say to myself: “Pretty amazing, RICK WAKEMAN, I repeat, RICK WAKEMAN is showing a photo of his cat through his cellphone to Saura”

We then speak about LED ZEPPELIN (he says he is very good friend with RP, friend with JPJ he recalls drinking with JOHN BONHAM. No mention of PAGE), football (he is well informed about Serie A, he briefly analyzes the last poor season of my beloved F.C Inter, he has great words for coach Mancini and he had great respect for my football god JOSE MOURINHO. Rick is a fan of BRENTFORD and MANCHESTER CITY football clubs.

Saura approaches me and whispers, “Goodness, you can talk about Inter even with Rick Wakeman?!”

Also we touch upon the topic of Cuba and of his adventure there (three concerts held in Havana in 2005) and about his long meeting with Fidel Castro. Very interesting chat. Rick puts you at ease, no snob rock star attitude. He really is a wonderful person.

Then the Rock fan in me jumps off, so I ask him if it bothers him to take a couple of photos with me and Saura. Rick is once more amenable, he jokes with Saura while I take the pics, they both begin to laugh … fantastic.

He writes “Saura, lots of love. Rick Wakeman ” on one of his autobiographies Saura took with her.

Then something unexpected happens, Saura hands him the homemade dvd of EQUINOX (our LZ tribute band) live at Blue J of Reggio Emilia 2015. I feel ashamed and say “See Rick, she is the biggest RW/Yes fan I know bur fortunately she loves also LZ, so we put together this band to having good time.” I beg Rick to throw it in the trash when he got home and he says to me, “Why, I want to see how you do the job.” Amateur footage, LZ covers, an average guitar player like me … what will think a high lineage musician like him? I am embarrassed at the thought.

Then comes the other Paolo. me and Saura introduce ourselves. While Rick does an interview for the PROG magazine Italian edition, Paolo tells juicy anecdotes about other names of Rock.

9,45 pm it is time to go on stage. The show is similar to the two that I’ve already seen, but to see WAKEMAN play is always a sweet emotion.

Rick speaks and tells some anecdotes between a songs. Then comes the time to dedicat few pieces to CHRIS SQUIRE, who died not too many days ago. Rick says something, the audience stands up and the late legendary bass player, founder and leader of the YES gets a big hand, a thunderous applause. The tribute to Chris consists in THE MEETING, AND YOU AND I and WONDEROUS STORIES.

The concert winds through classic traits of legendary albums like JOURNEY TO THE CENTRE OF THE EARTH and SIX WIVES OF HENRY VIII and other little things less known. There are the usual references to his collaborations with CAT STEVENS and DAVID BOWIE and his reworkings of HELP and ELEANOR RIGBY by the BEATLES.

A couple of encore; the last is THE JIG, a piece written for CIRQUE DU SOLEIL, a song that personally drives me crazy …

The show ends and we head in a hurry to the restaurant, a very blues one in the heart of the city.

No air conditioning, informal atmosphere, pleasant dinner night. Paolo still entertains us with stories about Rock.

After dinner, we are approaching the exit, I take Saura’s cell phone, inadvertently I touch the screen and in the background of the Galaxy model appears a photo of WAKEMAN. Rick is behind me, he sees it and says, “She needs help.”

Some fans are waiting at the entrance of the restaurant. Rick take his time to sign everything and to take photos with everyone. Wot a gentleman! We then get in Paolo’s car to take Rick to his hotel. There we say goodbye, Rick hugs and kisses Saura and he head for his room. We stay just a litlle bit longer with Claudio and then we leave Sweet Home Emilia Romagna bound.

We arrive at the Domus Saurea in Reggio Emilia at 4 o’clock in the morning, we take a shower and go to bed. It’s almost 5 am, I should go to work tomorrow morning and tomorrow afternoon we will go to Imola’s racetrack to see AC/DC … I do not know how I will but I will think about it tomorrow. It’s been a lovely evening and I want to enjoy the good vibes. I look to Saura, she is still smiling. “Goodnight baby. Rick Wakeman rules! “
