TT: Ciao Robby, tutto bene? Spero di sì. Senti, venerdì usciranno le deluxe edition di BURNIN’ SKY e RUN WITH THE PACK della BAD COMPANY, riusciresti ad averle per sabato? Farei un salto in centro da te a prenderle se fossero disponibili. Mi sai dire? Grazie.

RM: Dovrebbero arrivarmi venerdì mattina, comunque quando arrivano te ne metto via uno per tipo e poi ti avverto qui su FB. Tu vuoi le deluxe in CD, giusto?

TT: Certo le deluxe edition di due cd sia di BURNI’ SKY e RUN WITH THE PACK. Tienimele da parte. Lo sai che sono un super fan della Bad Company. Ci vediamo sabato verso le 10:30/11.

RM: Non sei un fan, tu sei “IL” fan!

Già, sono IL fan. Cosa ci sia nella musica della BAD COMPANY che mi irretisce così tanto lo sa solo il diavolo. Così, dopo la mezza delusione per le deluxe edition dei LZ (quelle che dovevano essere per me il non plus ultra) ecco le che vere edizioni speciali della mia vita diventano quelle della BAD COMPANY. Malgrado Paul Rodgers abbia sempre da ridire sul materiale bonus arrivando ad impedire l’inclusione di inediti e di versioni alternative, il risultato finale è comunque eccellente. Un remaster coi fiocchi degli album originali e un dischetto pieno di materiale aggiuntivo assai stuzzicante, il tutto ad un prezzo certamente abbordabile.

Questi ultimi due anni sono stati grandiosi da questo punto di vista per il fan della BAD COMPANY che c’è in me, l’anno scorso in maggio è uscito il primo live ufficiale tratto da registrazioni degli anni settanta

Ora finalmente lo step due con le versioni allargate del terzo e quarto album.

RUN WITH THE PACK (Swan Song/Island 1976) – TTTTT+

Gli album considerati migliori del gruppo sono i primi tre, dalla passionale semplicità del primo all’ eccellente produzione del secondo e del terzo. Il mio preferito è STRAIGHT SHOOTER, la copertina, i pezzi, l’atteggiamento mi rapirono già la prima volta che lo ascoltai, ma RUN WITH THE PACK è quasi sullo stesso livello. Ottime composizioni, suonato bene, scintillante, duro ed elegante. La copertina è magnifica, è la sola non curata dalla famosa HIPGNOSIS bensì da JOHN KOSH, altro luminare in fatto di copertine di album di gruppi Rock. Ispirata naturalmente alla canzone che dà il titolo all’album fu realizzata senza badare a spese, stampata su carta laminata con tanto di scritte grafica in rilievo. Purtroppo con queste ristampe si è giocato al risparmio, così la copertina di RWTP non ha nulla di quanto sopra esposto, e senza quell’effetto sembra davvero poca cosa. Triste anche vedere che rispetto alle confezioni dei primi due album qui le ante del packaging sono tre e non quattro rendendo così il tutto più modesto. Questo vale anche per BURNIN’ SKY. Note di copertina del grande David Clayton, ma a quanto sappiamo tagliate in maniera consistente da PAUL RODGERS.

Per la foto interna si volle ricreare una tipica scenetta della vita on the road di una rock and roll band. Un stanza spoglia di un motel, i componenti del gruppo un po’ sfasati, la televisione accesa (lo screenshot di Bugs Bunny fu inserito in un secondo momento, una volta che fu rifiutato al gruppo l’uso di un fotogramma di uno show televisivo di successo dell’ epoca).

Il gruppo che si appresta a registrate RWTP è un gruppo che gira a mille, al massimo delle sue capacità. I due album del 1974 e del 1975 sono stati grandi successi, dischi d’oro e dischi di platino fanno ora parte della storia del gruppo, tour in Europa, Nord America, Europa, Giappone, Australia e di nuovo Nord America si susseguono senza un attimo di respiro, alternati solo dalle settimane passate in studio. Questa vita on the road (o on the run, vista la fuga dal Regno Unito causa la faccenda delle altissime tasse richieste dai governi inglesi) si riflette nei pezzi, nei testi, nell’atteggiamento compositivo. Un veloce primo demo in Inghilterra nell’agosto del 1975 e poi via in Francia a registrare l’album col Rolling Stones mobile Studio. Tre settimane piene per mettere su nastro multitraccia i nuovi pezzi e quindi trasferimento a Los Angeles al Record Plant per altre tre settimane di sistemazione e abbellimento insieme al tecnico del suono Ron Nevison. E’ qui che viene aggiunta l’orchestra in RWTP e FADE AWAY con l’aiuto di JIMMY HOROWITZ. Ultime fasi al Kendum Recorders insieme ad Eddie Kramer. Finito il lavoro il gruppo ritorna qualche giorno in Inghilterra per stabilirsi poco dopo di nuovo fuori i confini della Perfida Albione. RWTB viene pubblicato il 28 gennaio ed è immediatamente un successo da Top 5 sia in UK che in USA. Non sono il più adatto a parlare di testi in inglese, non è la mia lingua madre dunque non è facile carpire secondi significati e come parole e concetti siano messi giù, ma paiono ben più che dignitosi. Contenuti e temi semplici, ma trattati con esperienza ed una certa eleganza. Qualche caduta di stile dovuta ad eccessi chimici e di testosterone, ma chi a quell’età e in quel frangente non avrebbe fatto lo stesso?

LIVE WITH THE MUSIC è scritta da Mick Ralphs e descrive alla perfezione il momento che il gruppo sta vivendo. E’ così che si apre l’abum, con un gran bel rock, lineare e pieno di pathos. Accordi tutt’altro che particolari (MI RE LA), ma presentati in maniera efficace. L’elementare giochetto sulla solista di Ralphs a metà pezzo è ormai diventato iconico. Non posso non sottolineare il cantato di Paul Rodgers, quando affronta la frase

do it to me all night long
any old thing gonna make me happy
long as I can sing my song

io vado in estasi.

Il brano sfuma su figure di basso e batteria e l’ultima rullata va ad infrangersi sull’inizio di SIMPLE MAN, altro episodio a firma Mick Ralphs. L’introduzione è molto suggestiva, la strofa deriva dalla versione di OHIO di NEIL YOUNG che fecero i MOTT THE HOOPLE (il gruppo in cui Ralphs militò prima di formare la BC). Rodgers eccelle anche in questo pezzo. Sappiamo che è stato un cantate stratosferico, ma apprezzare una volta di più la maniera che ha di fare sue canzoni scritte da altri è inevitabile. HONEY CHILD seppur sia scritta da tutti e 4 i membri del gruppo può essere catalogata nella sezione “boogie dozzinali” (“boogie by numbers”come direbbe il mio amico David Clayton, Free/Bad Co scriba extraordinaire) di Mick Ralphs, quei pezzi insomma un po’ banalotti basati sugli accordi classici del rock and roll/blues (I, IV, V) scritti senza ispirazioni particolari. E’ questo uno dei due episodi un po’ sottotono dell’album, e pensare che in USA uscì anche come singolo (con un pessimo e scontato lavoro da parte del marketing per il visual relativo: una ragazzina e un lecca lecca…mah!)

LOVE ME SOMEBODY è un delizioso quadretto gospel/soul scritto da Paul Rodgers. Il piano e l’organo incorniciano nostalgie di amori adolescenziali che tutti abbiamo vissuto. Funzionale l’assolo di chitarra.

Segue RUN WITH THE PACK, altro brano di Rodgers, e qui si vola in alto, molto in alto. Il gioco di piano su cui entra con determinazione la band è ormai uno stacco leggendario. La tematica ritorna essere quella dei fuorilegge in fuga, quella del pezzo BAD COMPANY del primo album tanto per capirci. Più di tre minuti sono dedicati a quella che io chiamo l’epica Rodgersiana, una lunga coda strumentale dipinta su tramonti nebbiosi dove Rodgers prima con un bel giochetto di piano e poi con un cantato da brivido conduce la band oltre confine. L’orchestra rende il tutto ancor più solenne e magistrali sono le rullate di Simon Kirke, a sottolineare la magniloquenza del momento. RUN WITH THE PACK fu scelta come singolo dell’album (Stati Uniti esclusi)

Di nuovo Paul Rogers al piano per SILVER BLUE & GOLD, una deep cut deliziosa. Ricami strumentali, melodie azzeccate, bel ritornello. Ricordo che all’epoca con gli amici ci divertivamo ad ascoltare YOUNG BLOOD, cover di un vecchio successo del 1957 dei COASTERS. Ci sembrava irresistibile l’attacco hard rock unito alla spensieratezza e alla leggerezza della canzone, mentre oggi pare meno efficace e un po’ stucchevole. Immagino che fu divertente per i ragazzi registrare questo pezzo, ma il passare del tempo di solito è impietoso per cosucce come questa. Intendiamoci, nulla di brutto, ma rimane uno dei due episodi meno riusciti dell’album. YOUNG BOLOOD uscì comunque come singolo negli Usa e raggiunse la Top 20. DO RIGHT BY YOUR WOMAN è un bel pezzo che Paul Rodgers scrisse al tempo dei PEACE, nel 1971, all’indomani del primo scioglimento dei FREE. Bel lavoro sulla chitarra acustica da parte del cantante che qui si cimenta anche all’armonica. Scenetta assai piacevole e adorabile assolo di slide guitar di Mick Ralphs

SWEET LIL’ SISTER è a firma Ralphs e benché rischi più volte di essere uno dei “boogie dozzinali” di Mick alla fine risulta un hard rock di tutto rispetto. Di nuovo un Paul Rodgers esorbitante. Bello il ritornello. L’apporto della band è essenziale con Kirke e Burrell che ce la mettono tutta per dare corpo al pezzo. Il testo è però mediocre. Chiude FADE AWAY, e qui l’epica Rodgersiana è allo zenith. Il concetto del testo gira intorno a quello del “è’ tutto relativo”. Come ha detto PR stesso a David Clayton “It reflects the distant feeling I get when I know that no matter how important it all seems now, will it really matter in the future?”. FADE AWAY è uno dei pezzi più profondi e belli della BAD COMPANY, e l’esecuzione e l’interpretazione dei musicisti è riuscitissima, da mettere in evidenza il lavoro di Mick Ralphs alle tastiere. Densi di mistero gli archi che accompagnano il brano.

L’album termina dunque sulle arie di un sentimento struggente che ben chiude un disco ottimamente realizzato. Nessun pezzo scritto a quattro mani come invece successe nei due precedenti, ed è un peccato perché sono da sempre convinto che le cose migliori si scrivano spesso in due, ma evidentemente la vita on the road, lo status di rockstar, le relazioni all’interno di una band portarono ad un allontanamento per ciò che riguarda questo aspetto.

Il materiale aggiuntivo è ottimo, è così che dovrebbero essere i bonus disc. Avrebbe potuto essere ancora più interessante, ma PR è testardo e quando non vuole che sia pubblicato qualcosa non c’è nulla da fare. Peccato, una ricerca più attenta nei nastri multitraccia avrebbe potuto significare avere qualche preziosità in più. Manca inoltre la versione alternativa di LOVE ME SOMEBOY.

LIVE FOR THE MUSIC  ha cantato e chitarra differenti, più rude rispetto all’originale, SIMPLE MAN ha un mix provvisorio così come HONEY CHILD. Quest’ultima ha anche un assolo di chitarra diverso, probabilmente migliore di quello finito poi sul disco. RUN WITH THE PACK viene presentata in versione completa, con un cantato differente e senza l’orchestra. LET THERE BE LOVE è la vera sorpresa per me. Una canzone nuova di zecca della Bad Company dei tempi d’oro. Pezzo scritto da Ralphs (sebbene all’inizio fossi incredulo e pensassi fosse scritta da Rodgers). Avrei preferito di gran lunga questa a HONEY CHILD, anche se il disco sarebbe diventato forse troppo orientato verso i lenti. Il sobrio assolo di Mick Ralphs mi arriva direttamente al cuore. Per Giove, quanto amo la BAD COMPANY.

Mix provvisorio anche per SILVER BLUE AND GOLD in cui salta all’orecchio le notevole differenza melodica del cantato e del coro nel ponte. Sorprendente. YOUNG BLOOD ha la traccia di voce differente, caduta di stile quando Mick Ralphs ad un certo punto dice “shagging” (scopare / scopando / ti scopo). Molto riuscita DO RIGHT BY YOUR WOMAN (Alternative Vocal), non saprei quale scegliere tra questa e quella che fu scelta per l’album. La BAD COMPANY in studio registrava dal vivo le tracce base, su cui poi si andava ad aggiungere cantati più precisi, assoli, abbellimenti; SWEET LIL’ BLUES è la versione live backing track. Molto interessante sentire come suonava dal vivo il gruppo  in studio di registrazione. FADE AWAY ha missaggio e assolo di chitarra differente, l’organo si sente più chiaramente. DO RIGHT BY YOUR WOMAN è proposta di nuovo in versione acustica e con il  basso di Boz Burrell. (I KNOW) I’M LOOSING YOU è un jam basata su un pezzo dei TEMPTATIONS ripreso in origine dai FACES. C’è una seconda versione di YOUNG BLOOD e poi si chiude col botto: FADE AWAY tratta dai demo dell’Island Studios suonata con la chitarra (strumento su cui in effetti PAUL RODGERS la scrisse). Versione alternativa stupefacente.

In definitiva dunque una deluxe edition coi fiocchi, consigliatissima. Se solo non avessero giocato al risparmio per quanto riguarda la confezione e se PAUL non avesse posto il veto su certe outtake, sarebbe stata stellare. Ma va bene anche così.

RM: You’re not a fan, you’re “THE” fan!

Yep, indeed, I’m THE fan (at least here in ole Italy). What is there in the music of BAD COMPANY that catches me so much only the devil knows. So, after the half-disappointment for the deluxe editions of LZ (they should have been for me the non plus ultra) I gotta say that the real special editions of my life are those of BAD COMPANY. Despite the fact that Paul Rodgers is always arguing over the bonus material and preventing the inclusion of previously unreleased songs and alternate versions, the final result is still excellent. A remastered original album and a second cd full of extra stuff, all at a reasonable price.

The last two years have been great for the BAD COMPANY  fan in me, last year in may  the first official live from recordings of the seventies came out

Now finally we have the third and fourth album’s extended versions. 

RUN WITH THE PACK (Swan Song/Island 1976) – TTTTT+  AAA

The best albums of the group are probbaly the first three, from the passionate simplicity of the first to the excellent production of the second and the third. My favorite is  STRAIGHT SHOOTER, the  artwork, the songs, the attitude, I took off instantly the first time I listened to it, but RUN WITH THE PACK is almost on the same level. RWTP has great tunes and good playing, it’s sparkling, hard and elegant. The cover is magnificent, it’s the only one not assigned to the famous HIPGNOSIS,  it was JOHN KOSH who did it, he was another giant in album covers world. Of course it’s inspired by the titletrack of the album and it was made without paying attention to the budget given that it was printed on laminated paper with embossed graphics. Unfortunately, with these reprints they wanted to save money, so this cover of RWTP does not have anything to do with the original one, and without that effect it really does seem a cheap affair. It is also sad to see that compared to the packages of the first two albums these new ones are folded in three (and not in four) making the whole thing more modest. This also applies to BURNIN ‘SKY. Liner notes by the great David Clayton, but as we know, consistently cut by PAUL RODGERS.

For the inner photo the band wanted to recreate a typical life-style sketch of a rock and roll band on the road. A bare room of a motel, the band members a bit off, the television turned on (Bugs Bunny’s screenshot was inserted later, once the group was refused the use of a frame of a television show of the era).

The group that approches the RWTP recordings is a group in top form, at the top of its capabilities. The two albums of 1974 and 1975 have been great hits, gold and platinum records are now part of the history of the band, tours in Europe, North America, Europe, Japan, Australia, North America continue without a a break, alternating only from the weeks spent in the studio. The aspects of the life on the road (or on the run, given the exile blues thanks to the English government tax politcs) is reflected in the songs. A quick first demo in England in August 1975 then off to France to record the album with the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio. Three full weeks to put the new pieces on multitrack tape and then another three weeks in Los Angeles at the Record Plant for embellishment along with Ron Nevison sound engineer. It is here that the orchestra is added to RWTP and FADE AWAY with the help of Jimmy Horowitz. More time at Kendum Recorders along with Eddie Kramer. After finishing the job the group returns to England for a few days then they leave Perfidious Albion again . RWTB is released on January 28 and it is immediately a Top 5 success in both UK and USA. I’m not the most suitable person to speak about English lyrics, it’s not my mother language, so it’s not easy for me to understand second meanings and how words and concepts are put down, but they look more than decent. Simple contents and themes, but treated with experience and some elegance. Some lapse in taste due to chemical and testosterone excesses, but who at that age and in that context would have not done the same?

LIVE WITH THE MUSIC is written by Mick Ralphs and perfectly describes the moment the group is experiencing. This is how the abum starts,  a good rocker, linear and full of pathos. Simple chords (MI RE LA … well… E D A), but presented effectively. The elementary lead guitar lick halfway is now iconic. I can’t help  emphasizing the singing of Paul Rodgers, when he sings the sentence

Hey baby gimme good lovin ‘
Do it all night long
Any old thing gonna make me happy
Long as I can sing my song

I swoon.

The song blurs on bass and drum figures and the last drum fill drifts into the beginning of SIMPLE MAN, another tune by Mick Ralphs. The introduction is very impressive, the verse derives from the cover Neil Young’s OHIO that MOTT THE HOOPLE did (the group in which Ralphs militated before forming BC). Rodgers excels in this piece as well. We know he was a stratospherical. singer, but we have to appreciate once more the way he has to make songs written by others his own . HONEY CHILD although is written by all 4 members of the group it can be cataloged in the “boogie by numbers” section (as my friend David Clayton, Free / Bad Co scriba extraordinaire would say) by Mick Ralphs, those kind of trite songs based on the classic rock and roll / blues chords (I, IV, V) written without particular inspiration. This is one of the two lame tracks of the album, in the US it even came out as a single go figure (with a bad and obvious marketing work for its visual: a girl and a lollipop … well!)

LOVE ME SOMEBODY is a delightful gospel / soul picture written by Paul Rodgers. The piano and the organ frame nostalgia of adolescent love we all experienced. Functional guitar solo.

Next is RUN WITH THE PACK, another RODGERS’ piece, and here we fly high, very high. The piano play on which enters the band is now a legendary breakthrough. The theme is again the one of the outlaws on the run, the same of  BAD COMPANY (the song from first album). More than three minutes are dedicated to what I call the Rodgersiana Epic, a long instrumental coda painted on misty sunsets where Rodgers – first with a nice piano play and then with a singing that brings shivers –  leads the band over the border. The orchestra makes it all the more solemn and masterly are the drums fills of SIMON KIRKE, to emphasize the magniloquence of the moment. RUN WITH THE PACK was chosen as a single (USA excluded)

Again Paul Rogers on the piano for SILVER BLUE & GOLD, a delicious deep cut. Instrumental embroidery, beautiful melodies, nice chorus. I remember that at the time with my friends we enjoyed listening to YOUNG BLOOD, the cover of an old 1953 COASTERS hit. We thought that the hard rock attack combined with the carefree and light of the song was irresisteible, while it seems less effective and a bit cuddly today. I imagine it was fun for the guys to record this piece, but as time goes by silly things like this lose their light feeling. I mean, nothing too bad, but it remains one of the two less successful songs of the album. YOUNG BLOOD anyway came out as a single in the US and it reached the top 20. DO RIGHT BY YOUR WOMAN is a good piece that Paul Rodgers wrote at the time of PEACE in 1971, the band he created the days after FREE’s first dissolution. Nice work on the acoustic guitar and the harmonica by the singer. Lovely and adorable slide guitar solo courtesy of Mick Ralphs.

SWEET LIL ‘SISTER is written by Ralphs and although it’s a risk of being one of Mick’s “boogie by numbers” in the end it’s a good hard rock song. Again we have a stellar performance by Paul Rodgers. Nice chorus. The contribution of the band is essential with Kirke and Burrell giving “body” to the piece. The lyrics are however mediocre. FADE AWAY closes the album, and here the Rodgersiana Epic is at its zenith. The words spins around the”it’s all relative” concept. As PR told to David Clayton “It reflects the distant feeling I get when I know that no matter how important it all seems now, will it really matter in the future?” FADE AWAY is one of the deeper and most beautiful pieces of BAD COMPANY, and the performance and interpretation of the musicians is very successful (we have Mick Ralphs on keyboards here). Full of mystery the strings that accompany the song.

The album ends on the arias of a moving feeling then, and it’s great way to end a record . No Ralphs/Rodgers composition here like it happened in the previous two records, and it’s a shame because I have always believed that the best things are often written four-handed, but obviously life on the road, rockstar status, relationships inside a band led to a departure from this aspect.

The additional material is great, every bonus disc should be like this. It could have been even more interesting, but PR is stubborn and when he does not want something  published there is nothing you can do. Too bad, a more careful search on multitrack tapes could have meant having some extra preciousness. Also an alternate version of LOVE ME SOMEBOY is missing.

LIVE FOR THE MUSIC has alternative vocal and guitar, it’s more rough than the original, SIMPLE MAN has an early mix, HONEY CHILD as well. The latter has also a different guitar solo and it’s probably better than the one on the original record. RUN WITH THE PACK is presented in full version, with alternative vocal and without the orchestra. LET THERE BE LOVE is the real surprise for me. A real new song from the golden age of Bad Company. The piece is written by Ralphs (though at first I thought it was more typical of Rodgers). I would have preferred this instead of HONEY CHILD, even if the disc might have become too slow songs oriented. The sober solo of Mick Ralphs goes right to my heart.By Jove, how much I love BAD COMPANY!

Early mix also for SILVER BLUE AND GOLD in which the great melodic difference of the bridge is a revelation. YOUNG BLOOD has alternative vocal, Mick Ralphs at some point says “shagging” …oh well! Well-done is DO RIGHT BY YOUR WOMAN (Alternative Vocal), I do not know what to choose between this and the one that was chosen for the original album. BAD COMPANY usually recorded the basic tracks live in the studio and it’s intersting to hear how the band approches thing  like SWEET LIL ‘BLUES. FADE AWAY has an early mix and different guitar solo and you hear the organ in a better way since the strings are missing. DO RIGHT BY YOUR WOMAN is proposed in a acoustic plus bass version. (I KNOW) I’M LOOSING YOU is a jam based on a song of TEMPTATIONS originally covered by the FACES. There is the second version of YOUNG BLOOD, and then everything ends with a surprise: FADE AWAY from the Island Studios demo played with the guitar (instrument on which PAUL RODGERS actually wrote it). Amazing alternative version.

In the end a fancy deluxe edition. It would have be stellar without PR ‘s veto on certain outtakes and with a proper high quality packaging, but hey, it remains a very fine edition anyway.
