Come annunciato il 28 aprile su questo blog la soundboard revolution della Empress Valley colpisce ancora, è appena uscito infatti – PER LA PRIMA VOLTA IN VERSIONE SOUNDBOARD – il concerto del 10 febbraio 1975 al CAPITOL CENTRE di LANDOVER (Maryland).

Benché negli ultimi anni siano stati parecchi i nuovi soundboard del 1975 ad uscire, per noi rimane sempre cosa buona e giusta. Sì, perché non saranno i LZ dell’immaginario collettivo (che come sappiamo sono finiti il 29/7/1973), ma anche in versione “lost horizons”(il tour del 1975 parte con Page con grossi problemi all’anulare sinistro e  con Plant vittima di una bronchite che gli rovinerà tutti i concerti, il tutto unito all’uso sempre più pesante di sostanze chimiche e dal peso di un successo ormai fuori controllo che schiaccia il gruppo verso il basso), un concerto dei LZ negli anni settanta era comunque una esperienza totalizzante.

La qualità audio di questo nuovo bootleg è ottima. Il tutto è assai bilanciato e ben miscelato, il basso e la pedaliera basso (strumenti che spesso sono sacrificati da una cattiva gestione del sound system) si sentono bene, credo che la SHOWCO nel 1975 raggiunse il proprio zenith con il tour dei LZ. Non credo esistano bootleg degli anni settanta che abbiano una qualità del genere.

ROCK AND ROLL è sempre slabbrata, PLANT entra a freddo e con evidenti problemi alla voce, problemi riscontrabili anche in SICK AGAIN: nella prima parte del pezzo l’abbassamento di voce è così marcato che uno si chiede come farà, non dico a finire il concerto, ma ad affrontare anche solo un altro singolo pezzo. Piuttosto sorprendentemente nella seconda parte della canzone la voce ha un miglioramento insperato. Rimarrà sempre il RP del 1975, ma perlomeno il concerto non è rovinato del tutto.

OVER THE HILLS non è davvero niente male ed è la prova che anche a mezzo servizio, i LZ erano comunque d’ andare a vedere. Nell’assolo c’è molto JIMMY PAGE.

IN MY TIME OF DYING non è nulla di speciale mentre THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME (stesso dicasi per THE RAIN SONG) è godibile

Segue KASHMIR pezzo che nei bootleg non ascolto mai. NO QUARTER è invece uno di quei brani che aspetto sempre con bramosia e il gruppo non mi delude; certo non è la NO QUARTER di THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME (il live ufficiale registrato a NY il luglio del 1973) ma è sempre stupendo seguire il gruppo lungo i sentieri del mistero, del “drama”, di quello insomma che differenzia i LZ da tutti gli altri gruppi di Hard Rock.

In MOBY DICK, malgrado i vari tentativi, PAGE non accorda nel modo giusto la corda del MI basso che per l’occasione viene portato a RE, così la parte bassa del riff risulta sballata. Questa la dice lunga sugli effetti (torpore/esaltazione) di certe sostanze.

DAZED AND CONFUSED, così complessa com’è in versione live 1975 (dai 30 ai 40 minuti ogni sera), non può essere perfetta con un PAGE in condizioni non ottimali, ma è sempre un momento di grande suggestione perdersi tra le profondità cosmiche delle improvvisazioni live dei LZ.

Ultimo pezzo prima del bis: STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN.

Quello che succedeva backstage tra STH e i bis lo si può immaginare constatando che la qualità delle performance cala drasticamente. PAGE che fatica a suonare riff (non certo impegnativo) di WHOLE LOTTA LOVE e la band che pare meno bilanciata  in BLACK DOG e HEARTBREAKER. Ah.

Ad ogni modo, per una testa di piombo è una registrazione da avere.

As announced on April 28 on this blog the soundboard revolution by Empress Valley strikes again, in fact it is out – FOR THE FIRST TIME FROM SOUNDBOARD SOURCE – the concert of 10 February 1975 at the CAPITOL CENTRE, LANDOVER (Maryland).

To date only the audience recording (not good quality) was available. Of that date, there is also an amateur video.

Although in recent years several new soundboards of the 1975 tour have been released every new one is a nice surprise to me. Yes, because even if it is not  the LZ  of the collective imagination (which we know were over after 29.7.1973), also in their  “lost horizons” phase (the 1975 tour starts with Page left ring finger with big problems and Plant victim of a bronchitis that will ruin all the concerts, combined with the heavy use of chemicals  substances and the weight of the level of  success out of control that crushes the group down), a concert of the LZ in the seventies was however, an all-encompassing experience.

The audio quality of this new bootleg is excellent. The whole is very balanced and well mixed, the bass and the bass pedal (instruments that often are sacrificed by a poor sound system management) are well up in the mix, I believe that Showco in 1975 reached its zenith with the LZ tour. I do not think there are other  bootlegs recorded in the seventies who have such a quality.

ROCK AND ROLL is always chipped, PLANT never did warm ups and obviously he has problems, same for SICK AGAIN: in the first part of the piece the voice sag is so marked that one wonders how he will face – not a whole concert –  but just another song. Rather surprisingly in the second part of the track the voice has an unexpected improvement. It will always remain the 1975 RP, but at least the concert is not ruined altogether.

OVER THE HILLS is not bad at all and it is proof that even “part time” LZ were still a band to see in concert. There is much JIMMY PAGE in the solo.

IN MY TIME OF DYING is nothing special while THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME (and THE RAIN SONG) is enjoyable

KASHMIR is a piece that in bootleg I never listen to. NO QUARTER is instead one of those songs that I always wait eagerly and the group does not disappoint; It is certainly not the NO QUARTER of THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME (the official live album recorded  in NY July 1973) but it is always wonderful to follow the group along the paths of the mystery and “drama”, of what in short differs LZ from all the other Hard Rock groups.

TRAMPLED UNDERFOOT is tasty.

In MOBY DICK, despite several attempts, PAGE does not tune in the right way the low E string which for the occasion is brought to D, so the lower part of the riff is busted. This says a lot about the effects (numbness / exaltation) of certain substances.

DAZED AND CONFUSED, as complex as it is in live version 1975 (from 30 to 40 minutes every night), can not be perfect with PAGE under non-optimal conditions, but it is always a moment of great charm to get lost in the cosmic depths of LZ live improvisations.

Last piece before the encore: STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN.

What it was happening backstage between STH and the encores you can only imagine,  the quality of  the performance drops drastically. PAGE struggles to play the WLL riff (not a challenging one) and the band seems less balanced in BLACK DOG and HEARTBREAKER. Ah.

Anyway, for a led head this is a recording to have.
