BAD COMPANY – Boston Garden – Boston MA. – August 6th 1977 – TTTTT

Lo scorso dicembre è apparsa come dal nulla – dopo più di 40 anni – la registrazione audience di un concerto della Bad Company tenutosi nell’estate del 1977 a Boston. Un capace e volenteroso amante delle registrazioni dal vivo ne ha fatto il transfer sistemando velocità altre piccole imperfezioni, il risultato è una vera goduria per i fan della Bad Company originale; è un’ ottima registrazione audience (presa dal pubblico) avvenuta circa dalla dodicesima fila. E’ vero che per molti gli anni d’oro della Original Bad Company sono i primi tre (1974/1975/1976), ma per chi come me ama le fase oblique dei gruppi questa è una live recording magnifica. Nonostante nel 1977 il gruppo fosse entrato in una fase di stanca dopo una trafila album-tour-album-tour-album-tour e il management (Peter Grant insomma) fosse già nel suo periodo buio, il tour dell’album Burnin’ Sky si rivelò davvero meglio del previsto. La band è viva e pronta e questa registrazione dal vivo ne è una perfetta testimonianza: ascoltandola in cuffia non si può che apprezzare l’eccellente acustica che aveva il Boston Garden e il groove e l’amalgama di un gruppo forse troppo sottovalutato.

Burnin’ Sky apre il concerto con un ottimo impatto. I quattro sono in forma, lo si nota subito e i 15000 del Boston Garden non sono da meno, l’accoglienza è straordinaria, battimani, urla … in quegli anni la Bad Company in America era davvero un gruppo di grande, grande successo. Ottimo l’assolo di Ralphs, fluido e veloce. Fine del primo pezzo, trionfo!

Too Bad segue con la consueta carica. Ralphs è sulla Stratocaster (il suono della chitarra mi pare inequivocabile), questo toglie un po’ di corpo al pezzo, ma il risultato è comunque ottimo. Iniziare un concerto con due pezzi di fila da quello che all’epoca era ultimo album (Burnin’ Sky 1977) è da intrepidi, ma l’entusiasmo del pubblico ripaga il coraggio. Ready For Love dal primo disco infiamma ulteriormente i fan presenti. La qualità audience è davvero superba, il suono è pieno e rotondo, Kirke e Burrell sono definiti e ben presenti. Efficace l’assolo di Mick e come sempre superbo Paul Rodgers. La coda finale è suggestiva, il pubblico apprezza moltissimo, degna conclusione di un piccolo gioiello musicale… I need your love, give me your love … canta Paul mentre il brano si chiude. Brividi. Dopo il classico dal primo album è tempo per altri tre (!) brani presi da Burnin’ Sky, quasi una sfida, una spacconeria. La versione da studio di Heartbeat mi è sempre piaciuta molto mentre la sua trasposizione in contesto live mi ha spesso lasciato perplesso, l’arrangiamento non sembra funzionare a dovere. Qui si aggiunge alla chitarra anche Paul Rodgers. Like Water proviene dai tempi dei Peace (parentesi tra il primo scioglimento e la conseguente reunion dei Free a cavallo del 1971). Tipico andamento del pezzo rodgersiano, qui reso perfettamente da una grande esecuzione, aiutata anche da un suono d’insieme spettacolare. A volte i bootleg audience sono davvero il massimo per capire cosa significava assistere ad un concerto di un gruppo rock negli anni settanta. La chitarra ritmica di Rodgers guida il pezzo mentre gli altri tre aggiungono colore, calore e garra. Canzone al contempo leggiadra e potente. Perfetta. Leaving You ha un tempo simile al precedente ma ha un andamento più ritmato. Rock duro di gran foggia.

Dopo cinque pezzi da Burnin’ Sky (e uno dal primo album) si passa ai classici. Deal With The Preacher è un hard rock vibrante, che definisce l’indole dura del gruppo. Ralphs continua ad usare la Fender Stratocaster ed è l’unico appunto che mi permetto, convinto come sono che nelle canzoni più decise il suono della Bad Company sia quello corposo e pieno della Gibson Les Paul. Nonostante i fan intorno a chi effettuò la registrazione continuino a richiedere Rock Steady, il gruppo si lancia a testa bassa verso In The Midnight Hour, cover del pezzo di Wilson Pickett e Steve Cropper. E’ la prima volta che questo pezzo appare in una registrazione (ufficiale e non) della Bad Company, rende quindi questa registrazione ancor più appassionante. Rodgers è sempre stato un fan della musica R&B e Soul. Versione rock che va dritto al punto. Paul canta alla sua porca maniera. La gente continua a chiedere Rock Steady, c’è addirittura che urla “All Right Now”, il classico dei Free. Segue Simple Man. Introduzione seducente, sviluppo su tempo medio, coda che riprende le coinvolgenti atmosfere iniziali. Con Shooting Star si entra nel campo del sing-along, a fine brano l’ovazione del pubblico. Rodgers si accomoda al piano per un paio di pezzi: la trascinante Run With The Pack con mistica coda finale e la classicissima Bad Company, una dichiarazione d’intenti dipanata tra il sorgere del sole e le foschie spirituali. That’s why they call me la gente sembra perdere il controllo. Manifesto condiviso anche di chi è costretto a vite meno eccitanti.

La band esce dal palco e poco dopo ritorna per due superclassici. La gente lancia grida isteriche quando riconosce Feel Like Makin’ Love. Versione bollente. Can’t Get Enough spazza via ogni resistenza, tutti al galoppo nella stessa direzione, verso l’essenza del rock, verso quei momenti che rendono bella la vita. Come on, come on, come on and do it Come on and-uh do what you do I can’t get enough of your love I can’t get enough of your love I can’t get enough of your love. Essendo la chitarra di Mick Ralphs accordata aperta di Do, dopo l’intermezzo solista a due chitarrè, è Rodgers che improvvisa sul finale. Nella scatenata chiusura viene citata anche Satisfaction dei Rolling Stones.

Concerto dunque memorabile e live recording da avere a qualsiasi costo se si vuol capire che cosa sia la musica rock, quella magari senza troppe pretese ma vera e palpitante.

Last December a new tape appeared as if out of nowhere after more than 40 years: the audience recording of a Bad Company concert held in the summer of 1977 in Boston. A capable and willing lover of live recordings has made the transfer setting speed and other small imperfections, the result is a real pleasure for fans of the original Bad Company; it is an excellent audience recording (taken from the crowd) approx from the12th row. It is true that for many the golden years of the original Bad Company are the first three (1974/1975/1976), but for people like me who love the oblique phases of a groups this is a magnificent live recording. Although in 1977 the group had entered a vacuum period after an album-tour-album-tour-album-tour routine and the management (Peter Grant in short) was already in its dark phase, the Burnin ‘Sky tour was better than expected. The band is alive and ready and this live recording is a perfect testimony: listening to it on headphones you can not but appreciate the excellent acoustics that the Boston Garden had and the groove and the amalgam of a group perhaps too underrated.

Burnin ‘Sky opens the concert with a great impact. The four are in good shape, you notice it immediately and the 15000 of the Boston Garden are not far behind, the reception is extraordinary, clapping, screaming … in those years the Bad Company in America was really a group of great success. Ralphs’ guitar solo is good, fluid and fast. End of the first piece: a triumph! 

Too Bad follows with his usual heavy riff. Ralphs is on the Stratocaster (the sound of the guitar seems to me unequivocal), this steals something from the “body” of the track, but the result is still excellent. Starting a concert with two pieces in a row from what was at the time the last album (Burnin ‘Sky 1977) is an intrepid move, but the enthusiasm of the public repays the courage. Ready For Love from the first album further inflames the fans present. The audience quality is really superb, the sound is full and round, Kirke and Burrell are defined and well present. Effective is the Mick’s solo and as always superb is Paul Rodgers. The final coda is suggestive, the public appreciates it a lot, worthy conclusion of a little musical jewel … I need your love, give me your love … sings Paul while the song closes. Thrills. After the classic from the first album it is time for another three (!) songs off the Burnin’ Sky album, almost a challenge, a bravado. I’ve always liked very much the studio version of Heartbeat while its transposition in the live context has often left me perplexed, the arrangement does not seem to work properly. Like Water comes from the times of the Peace (bracket between the first dissolution and the consequent reunion of  Free in1971). Typical tempo of the Rodgersian piece, here perfectly rendered by a great  performance also aided by the spectacular overall sound. Sometimes the audience bootleg recordings are really the best to understand what it meant to attend a concert by a rock band in the seventies. Rodgers’ rhythm guitar drives the piece while the other three add color, warmth and garra (grit). A song at the same time graceful and powerful. Perfect. Leaving You has a similar tempo to the previous one but has more rhythmic touch. Hard rock of great shape.

After five pieces from Burnin ‘Sky (and one from the first album) we move on to the classics. Deal With The Preacher is a vibrant hard rock, which defines the hard rock side of the group. Ralphs continues to use the Fender Stratocaster and is the only thing that I allow myself to criticize given that I am sure that the Gibson Les Paul guitar has the perfect sound for  Bad Company’s harder numebr. Despite the fans continue to request Rock Steady, the group heads headlong towards In The Midnight Hour, a cover of the Wilson Pickett Steve Cropper song. It is the first time that this piece appears in a recording (official or otherwise) of Bad Company, thus making this recording even more exciting. Rodgers has always been a fan of R & B and Soul music. It’s a rock version that goes straight to the point. Paul singsin his fucking great way. People keep asking Rock Steady, there’s even someone shouting “All Right Now”, the Free classic. Instead Simple Man follows: Sseductive introduction, development on a moderate rock tempo, coda that incorporates the enthralling initial atmospheres. With Shooting Star we enter the sing-along moment, at the end of the piece the ovation of the audience is a tributes ato the group. Rodgers sits at the keyboards for a couple of tracks: the ecaptivating Run With The Pack with the mystical final coda and the classic Bad Company, a declaration of intent unraveled between the sunrise and the spiritual mists. When Paul starts to sing,Company, always on the run Destiny is the rising sun Oh, I was born 6-gun in my hand Behind the gun I’ll make my final stand That’s why they call me people seem to lose control. A shared manifesto also of those who are forced to less exciting lives.

The band leaves the stage and shortly after returns for two superclassics. People goes hysterical when they recognize Feel Like Makin ‘Love. Hot version. Can not Get Enough sweeps away any resistance, all galloping in the same direction, towards the essence of rock, towards those moments that make life beautiful. Come on, come on, come on Do not get enough of your love I can not get enough of your love. Being the guitar of Mick Ralphs in C open tuning, after the solo interlude with two guitarists, it is Rodgers who improvises on the  coda. The “Rolling Stones” Satisfaction is also mentioned in the unleashed ending.

So, a memorable concert and a live recording to have at any cost if you want to understand what is (was) rock music, rock music perhaps without too many claims but true and throbbing.
