Questo cofanetto raccoglie naturalmente le registrazioni fatte dalla Premiata in terra inglese per la BBC tra il 1974 e il 1976, ed è spettacolare. Certo, sono registrazioni che giravano già tra i collezionisti e nel circuito dei bootleg, ma non in questa qualità, soprattutto le cose video.
Ho scritto spesso su questo blog che la PFM è uno dei grandi gruppi di quello che ora chiamano progressive rock, un gruppo che non sfigura per nulla davanti ai giganti inglesi: ELP, YES, GENESIS, KING CRIMSON. Magari è arrivata con un annetto di ritardo, finendo per essere certamente influenzata dai primi lavori dei colleghi britannici, ma ha saputo con estrema leggiadria portare avanti un discorso anche originale grazie alle suggestioni mediterranee e alla bellezza delle composizioni. Io quando sento gli album storici della PFM degli anni settanta godo di quella musica magnifica in modo totale, completo, cosmico. Sapete che in campo prog io vado matto per i miei amati ELP, ma davanti alla Premiata a volte mi chiedo quale sia il vero amore prog della mia vita.
Queste registrazioni mostrano che razza di eccellenti musicisti, arrangiatori e compositori fossero i ragazzi della PFM. Dal punto di vista strumentale di sicuro sopra ai GENESIS, e probabilmente alla pari con YES e ELP. Il concerto del 1975 è quello relativo alla formazione classica a cinque, dove i cantati sono quindi quelli più eterei e morbidi, pur mantenendo sempre buona determinazione; questa è la formazione forse più amata …

A me però piace molto anche il periodo caratterizzato dall’entrata di BERNARDO LANZETTI alla voce, ma capisco che il suo modo di cantare piuttosto graffiante possa non essere cosa per tutti.

Il DVD è molto godibile, il materiale è tratto dal programma THE OLD GREY WHISTLE TEST ed è bellissimo vedere FLAVIO, FRANZ, FRANCONE, MAURO e PATRICK perdersi candidamente nella loro grande musica. CELEBRATION come sempre è favolosa, ALTA LOMA piena di sciccherie chitarristiche e CHOCOLATE KINGS grintosissima, con una variazione solo strumentale da brividi.
Sì, lo so, sto usando troppo iperbole, ma la PFM, questa PFM, le merita tutte. Best prog band ever!
PS: Non ringrazierò mai abbastanza GREG LAKE per aver portato il gruppo alla Manticore agli inizi degli anni settanta.

This box set collects of course all the recordings made by Premiata on English soil for the BBC between 1974 and 1976, and it is spectacular. Sure, they are recordings that were already flying among collectors and on the circuit of bootlegs, but not in this quality, especially the video bits.
I have written often on this blog that the PFM is one of the great groups of what is now called progressive rock, a group that doesn’t do badly before the british giants ELP, YES, GENESIS, KING CRIMSON. Maybe they came with a year delay so they were certainly influenced by the early works of the British colleagues, but they managed to carry on a musical work with extreme loveliness, a work that was also original thanks to the Mediterranean suggestions and to the beauty of the compositions. When I listen to PFM’s classic albums of the seventies I enjoy the magnificent music in a total, complete, cosmic way. You know that in the field of prog I go crazy for my beloved ELP, but before the Premiata sometimes I wonder what is the true prog love of my life.
The cds of this box set show what kind of excellent musicians, arrangers and composers were the PFM boys. From the point of view of instrumental ability they are safely above GENESIS, and probably on a par with YES and ELP. The concert of 1975 is related to the classical five member line up, where the vocal offer is the the most ethereal and soft, while maintaining good determination; this line up is perhaps the most beloved …
Howeve I also like the period characterized by the entry of singer BERNARDO LANZETTI, but I understand that his way of singing, rather scratchy, may not be something for everyone.
The DVD is also very enjoyable, the footage is taken from the program THE OLD GREY WHISTLE TEST and it is great to see FLAVIO, FRANZ, FRANCONE, MAURO and PATRICK playing candidly their great music. CELEBRATION as always is fabulous, ALTA LOMA is full of guitar elegance and CHOCOLATE KINGS is gritty, with a super instrumental variation.
Yes, I know, I’m using too much hyperboles, but the PFM, this PFM, deserves ‘em all. Best prog band ever!
