E’ dal 1979 che DAVID CLAYTON dirige FAS, la fanzine su FREE & Related, ed è sorprendente che sia ancora in attività dopo 36 anni, soprattutto in quest’epoca in cui siamo tutti continuamente connessi. Apprezzo molto il fatto che DAVID abbia ancora energie e cose da dire, di approfondimenti e riflessioni di questi tempi ce n’è un gran bisogno. Conosco CLAYTON da trent’anni, ultimamente siamo ritornati in contatto ed è stato un gran piacere richiedergli qualche numero arretrato recente, in particolare l’ultimo. Già, il 134, dove CLAYTON recensisce le prime due deluxe edition appena uscite della BAD COMPANY, 7 paginette piene di considerazioni scritte da chi ha curato queste nuove edizioni a cui se ne aggiungono altre 12 dove ne viene descritta la genesi. Per un fan della BAD COMPANY è davvero emozionante seguire passo dopo passo la ricerca dei nastri, gli imprevisti, le varie peripezie. Era la prima volta che DAVID lavorava con la WARNER ed è appassionante capire i meccanismi che ci sono dietro queste riedizioni. Mentre lavorava a questi progetti, DAVID ha dovuto passare momenti molto difficili dal punto di vista personale, lo si percepisce chiaramente dai suoi scritti, gli fa quindi onore che abbia comunque portato a termine il tutto.
Ci sono poi sei pagine di una intervista inedita con PAUL RODGERS, intervista fatta per dar corpo alle liner notes e chiarire alcuni punti. Abbiamo inoltre le recensioni di un bootleg di RODGERS (London RAH 3 nov 2014) e dei due dischi dei BACK STREET CRAWLER di PAUL KOSSOFF (THE BAND PLAYS ON DEL 1975 e 2nd STREET del 1976) versione giapponese HQCD, usciti in ottobre del 2014.
Nelle NEWS si legge che il box set di 19 cd di FREE di cui abbiamo parlato tempo fa qui sul blog è stato definitivamente cassato, anche grazie ai continui lamenti di PAUL RODGERS, uno che non ama vedere troppe versioni dello stesso pezzo sulle ristampe dei dischi dei suoi gruppi. Stranamente pare però che abbia accettato di far uscire gli album dei FREE in versione deluxe edition, vedremo cosa succederà. Per tornare alla BAD COMPANY non ci sono garanzie che vengano pubblicate le deluxe edition anche degli altri quattro album, come dice DAVID, la RHINO e la WARNER vorranno capire come vanno le vendite di questi due primi capitoli.

It’s since 1979 that DAVID CLAYTON runs FAS, the FREE & Related fanzine, and it is surprising that it is still in business after 36 years, especially in this era in which we are all constantly wired. I really appreciate the fact that David still has energy and things to say, insights and reflections are very important these days. I’ve been knowing CLAYTON for thirty years now, recently we got back in touch again and it was a great pleasure to order some FAS back issues, particularly the last. Yep, the 134 issue, the one where CLAYTON reviews the first two BAD CO deluxe editions just out; 7 pages full of considerations written by who has taken care of these new editions, to which are added other 12 pages where he describes the genesis. For a fan of BAD COMPANY it is really exciting to follow step by step the search of the tapes, the unexpected, the various adventures. It was the first time DAVID worked with WARNER and it is exciting to understand the mechanisms that are behind these reissues. While working on these projects, DAVID had to pass a very difficult time in terms of personal matters, it is clearly discernible from his writings, still he completed the whole thing. Hats off to him.
Then there are six pages of an unpublished interview with PAUL RODGERS, interview made to give substance to the liner notes and clarify some points. We also have reviews of a bootleg of RODGERS (RAH London November 3, 2014) and of the two albums of PAUL KOSSOFF’S BACK STREET CRAWLER: THE BAND PLAYS ON (1975) and 2nd STREET (1976) in HQCD Japanese version, released in October 2014.
In the NEWS section he states that the box set of 19 CDs of FREE we mentioned here on the blog long ago, was finally quashed, also thanks to the constant complaints of PAUL RODGERS, one who does not like to see too many outtakes of the same songs. Strangely, however, it seems he have agreed to release the deluxe editions of the FREE albums, we’ll see what happens. Back to the BAD COMPANY topic, there are no guarantees that they they will release the deluxe editions of the other four albums, as David says Rhino and Warner will want to understand how are sales of these two first chapters.
